Hello all,

In our continuing quest to make our Patreon platform more rewarding to your generosity (starting with last month's tier-revamp), Red and I wanted to ask everyone for feedback about the way we do video commissions.

As it stands, anyone can pledge $100, and so long as their topic is in line with the tone and content our channel, we'll do it. However, in practice, we've seen $100 patrons come and go, commissioning a video and not sticking around for very long. We definitely get it, $100 is a lot of money, but we feel that this system may be indirectly unfair to longtime patrons who have pledged at the $20, $10, or even $5 for months and years but haven't been awarded that opportunity.

As a solution, we considered the option of instead awarding a video commission to any patron, regardless of tier, whose lifetime pledges exceed $1,000 — That's about a year's worth of weekly $20 pledges (or a season's worth of weekly $100 pledges).

So we put the question to you, our patrons: How would you like us to handle video commissions?  We recognize this doesn't affect everybody, but we'd like to hear everyone's thoughts.

Cheers,

-Blue

On the whole, I think the proposed new system makes a lot more sense and is fairer overall, but it could become unwieldy over time. If the channel (fingers crossed!) exists five years from now, is everyone who pledged $10/video for the intervening time going to get a video request? I'm probably overthinking this, but I thought I'd mention it just to be safe.

Possibly unrealistic, but why not both? Have it that if a Patron wants to make a suggestion right now (like say a real-world lore-heavy game like God of War comes out and they want to hear about the lore there while the game is still fresh in peoples' minds). Or they can have an idea ready for when they've given enough to reach that $1000 threshold (Like the history of the Apache, assuming there's no piece of media that brings that to the forefront of peoples' minds).

Good point. I suppose a workaround would simply be the ability of a patron to make a one-time pledge of the full quota amount if they wanted to be particularly swift about it. That would also likely be why we would keep the $100-per-video pledge in place in this new system. It would be identical to the $20 in every way except you would reach the Commission target significantly faster. Still, thanks for voicing your opinion! -B

That's a fair point, and while we may have to stagger rewards if by some circumstance a bunch of patrons on a lower tier cross the threshold at once, it's still fundamentally the fairest thing to do in our minds. And even still, if we do get to that point (fingers indeed crossed) we may well need the extra suggestions with all the videos we'll have made in the meantime to reach that point! Thanks for commenting with your thoughts! -B

Maybe have it so that you randomly choose patrons who have been pledged any amount for over 6 months or more?

I have no idea what the back-end of Patreon looks like in terms of the bookkeeping involved in that sort of system, and while I have no particular horse in this race, I think it's laudable you are at least considering a cumulative approach!

OSP

We have access to some basic analytics, so it's doable without too much hassle -B

Maybe have that $1000 threshold for everyone, but have a specific one time payment option of $400 or something for a specific video. It really depends on the influx of requests and how much you feel you time and effort is worth. Also in your requested video topic can you have Red sing a favourite song of yours? ...maybe that could be a different tier bonus :P

Honestly $100 or $1000 both work for me. 1000 keeps me in the game and 100 means if I'm flush one month I can drop it to you. Side thing though and this is slightly off topic but I love Red's chibi drawings and I know she is busy but is there a tier or stacking system where I could get another chibi request? Kinda like on the system you mentioned? Also gotta say the one she did for me made the friend who inspired it (the Goth Persephone lady) very happy.

Maybe give the chance to lower tier patrons to participate in video topic choices in some other way, like polls every X months.

What if you did it lottery style for the $1000-threshold backers? If someone crosses the $1000 threshold, and they've never had a commission done by you, whenever you have the time for a commission video you can hold a lottery and the winner gets the commission (with a few backup lottery winners in cases of incompatible ideas or lack of desire for a commission.) That way, eventually everyone who crosses the threshold will get their chance at a commission, but it won't become overwhelming if suddenly a bunch of $20 backers cross the threshold at the same time. You could also have a higher one-time pledge option that you feel more comfortable with for guaranteed commissions, if $100 is too low. Maybe in the $300-600 range?

So here's my idea. Obviously, your show means your decision. The way I would roll with it is a customizable reward system. A lump sum donation for a specific video is pretty neat and if that's all I wanted that would be kind of neat, though it would be fair to your channel of you felt like raising the price of a video. Though the life time donors that exceed a certain amount, $1000 or whatever Red and Blue decide, can recommend a reward for themselves. Red and Blue as a pair are pretty diversified with their talents so why not ask the donor what they want? For instance if a donor couldn't think of a video topic but wants a chibi mural of the Greek pantheon, or some free merch, or a guest appearance. With another reward after another check point, like every $1000 for example if someone lasts that long. This all may not be feasible but it would be interesting. This is certainly one of the most responsive pages that I know of. So, if any page could do it, it would be OSP.

Why not both?

Option 3 idea: Pick a movie and have blue or red nit pick it apart from either a historic or literary/trope concept OR pointing out the cleverness in comedies that make clever references. e.g. Watching Season of the Witch (6:00 ish minutes in) with Nicholas Cage and Ron Perlman, while the armor is probably appropriate for the period (chain mail) these guys are charging down a massive sand dune, on foot, wielding swords. The characters depicted are supposed to be knights. I'm genuinely wondering what Blue's sarcastic commentary would be and that's before Red chiming in randomly and pointing out that the guy who plays the Hound in game of thrones shows up before the 3 minute mark.

Basically I would love to see Red and Blue mock B movies...... I'll go back to my movie now.

Question: I can afford about 5 dollars per video, or about 15 to 20 dollars per month... which is more than I pledge to anyone else. I adore your art, and would love to commission a picture, but I don't think I can pledge to 20 dollars per video... I'm wondering whether I might eventually have a chance at a picture?

OSP

Hiya! I take commissions - a one-time payment for a full-color chibi costs $25. If you want to do that, just send me an email at overlysarcasticproductions@gmail.com and we can discuss! -R

I would LOVE to be able to give you guys $1000 to do a video over a specific topic because I love what you guys are doing...but I'm a poor public servant and most of my money gets spent on history books. I've actually been trying to save up so I can do a one-time $100 contribution and then return to my lowlely $5 a video. So for me, I completely understand why you would want to go that rout, and if you guys decide to go that way I'll still be a patron, but I just don't think $1000 is a feasible option for me fanancially. Sorry. :(

I consider that $100 pledge is something not everyone can make, but it seems to be persuasive reward. Also, I think $1000 is a long wait for someone like me ($10) pledge. How does smaller rewards for achieving lifetime $100, $200, $500, $1000? Like a once a x-time lottery for higher rewards, once you win you are out (of the corresponding lottery stuff).

myoubae

I like the idea of lifetime pledges quite a bit. Honestly, i feel like rewarding loyalty is really what Patreon should be about and you’d be doing that. 1000 is a little steep for me, but I wouldn’t have been able to do 100 a month anyway so it may just be too rich for my blood...

Having some more donation options would be nice like an option between 20, and 100. Other than that having it at 1000 seems very reasonable for the effort put into these videos especially videos like dionysus.
