Trope Talk: Chosen Ones

Do we like this trope? Hate it? …Can we really pin it down at all? For such a well-known literary device, it really doesn't seem to MEAN much most of the time. But sometimes, "chosen one" is more than just "designated hero" and actually opens the story up for some interesting plotlines! So to celebrate this happy new year, let's all talk about what it means to be a Chosen One! Yeah I know that one Lord of the Rings clip widescreened itself off the projector. My bad~ Got a favorite chosen one/chosen one type? Drop a comment! EXAMPLES USED (ROUGHLY IN ORDER OF FIRST APPEARANCE): Vision of Escaflowne, Inuyasha, Harry Potter, Star Wars Ep. 1, Kung Fu Panda, My Hero Academia, Shazam/Captain Marvel, Spectacular Spider-Man, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Green Lantern: First Flight, Trollhunters, Merlin, Ultimate Spider-Man, Thundercats (2011), Voltron: Legendary Defenders, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Legend of Zelda franchise, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, W.I.T.C.H., Exalted, Lord of the Rings, The Lion King, Berserk, Moana PATREON: www.patreon.com/user?u=4664797 MERCH LINKS: Shirts - https://overlysarcasticproducts.threadless.com/designs All the other stuff - http://www.cafepress.com/OverlySarcasticProducts Find us on Twitter @OSPYouTube!

A random homeless lady pointed to me in a crowd and told me that I was going to get her some McDonalds' and I'm having an existential crisis as to whether I can really go through with fulfilling her request. Does that mean I'm the Chosen One?

Love this topic, although I usually end up subverting it a bit in my own writing. This video did end up reminding me of a really good short story from Apex Magazine's Upside Down anthology where 3/4 "Chosen Ones" go to take care of some big bad and then it turns out they were all selected as Chosen One's because Cuthulu wanted to draw them to him, so they weren't really Chosen One's, they were prey. It was fun.

Hi! I'm a total noob writer (see also: hack) and I was wondering if a potential deconstruction of the "chosen one" narrative would be to frame it this way: a character was not "chosen" by some person, event, or entity beyond their control, but rather the character is a "chosen one" simply because they themselves CHOSE to take initiative. And destiny goes, "Fine, you'll do." Has this been done before? Did anything I just cay make any sense? Also, HUGE FAN! Always glad to see you guys in action! GO TEAM R&B!
