This movie was really special. I think it's because I could relate in a small way with my little sister. Also, the story and acting were fantastic! I'm so glad I watched this one :)

[Full Reaction] Rain Man (1988)

Comments

Just Plain Bob

Great movie. Dustin Hoffman was superb in this but I always felt that Tom Cruise had the harder, more thankless role, which he carried off very, very well.

Jason Dolan

One of Cruise’s finest performances. He really does a 180 in this movie and he was overshadowed by the incredible Dustin Hoffman. I would have given Cruise Best Actor in 88 and Hoffman Best Supporting Actor though. Can’t wait for you to watch The Color of Money. Still criminal Cruise wasn’t nominated for Best Supporting Actor in that!

Brian McGovern

Great score by Hans Zimmer as well. I think this was the score that got him noticed in Hollyweird.

kaiielle

Ooh, I think I will settle in with this watchalong tonight to cap off my Saturday. Thank you Cassie! Glad to hear you enjoyed watching it.

Tim Raths

Fun fact: The song that plays in the opening scene of Rain Man also plays in Mission: Impossible 2.

Brian McGovern

Some trivia for you. The guy who does the evaluation at the end of the movie is played by the director Barry Levinson. The guy who played Dr Bruner is played by Gerald Molen who I think co produced this movie. He was also in Jurrasic Park as the vet looking after the sick triceratops

Bill Maurer

Glad you enjoyed it. This really is a great movie with great performances by Cruise and Hoffman. My best to you and your wonderful family

Zane From Canada

This is a special one for me. 🥲 My best friend has autism. It's not as extreme as Raymond's, but he struggles a lot socially. I'm his Charlie.

Brian McGovern

That was obviously a tough outro for you to do. Siblings with special disabilities can be tough. My oldest sister has William Syndrome and she can nice as pie one moment and a complete B*#ch the next. She lives with my parents who are getting on in age, but they look after her and do what needs to be done because she is their daughter and it is what a parent should do. I do not envy them their position. Despite my sister's tumultuous mood swings, we all love our sister.

Aj R

Raymond was based off of a real life man named Kim Peek, who was actually from Utah. Dennis Hoffman spent time with him researching this role. PLEASE Cassie, read up on Kim Peek, he will amaze you.

JL_83

Tom Cruise said the studio really struggled with how to market this movie cause no one knew what “Rain Man” meant…of course when it became a big hit and won multiple Oscars they probably forgot all about that, lol

rubberkidney

when he counted the toothpicks they forgot the one that raymond already had so if 246 were on the ground and 4 were still in the box where did the one toothpick raymond has come from?

Kevin Townsend

Great movie. I’d like to suggest Sling Blade. It was written and directed by, and stars Billy Bob Thornton as a mentally challenged man who befriends a young boy with a troubled home life.

TinCan Cosmanaut

When it was between Minority report and Rain man. I was like oh I know which Cassie will really like.

Philip Alan

HUGS HUGS HUGS - thank you for that outro. Thank you.

Andrew Rose

Never felt so moved to give someone a hug in my entire life as during that outro... lovely reaction, glad you got to experience this movie.

Shawn Kildal

My sister's youngest has autism, and he's a great kid with the best parents and family members anyone could wish for. I appreciate this movie even more now than I did when I first saw it. I looked at the waitress in this movie and remembered that she was in Jerry Maguire with Tom Cruise (the overprotective sister). I'm a big Dustin Hoffman fan. My 2 favorites of his are Kramer vs. Kramer and Finding Neverland. Both are outstanding. Thank you for sharing, Cassie. See you in the states soon!

Brian Lowery

Twenty years of teaching and over 3,300 students has taught me, if you’ve seen one person with ASD, you’ve seen one person with ASD. I’ve taught kids at every shade of the spectrum, and each brought their own perspectives and challenges. While the name of this film did become a pejorative for people with ASD, it also introduced a mass audience to this condition. We’ve come a long way since then with regards to education and understanding, but we still have a ways to go. It was fun to revisit this film after so many years.

Carol_White

The card dealer in Vegas also played a card dealer in Scorsese's Casino.

Stick Figure Studios

Fun fact. The director of this film, Barry Levinson (who appears at the end as the guy who does the evaluation), also did THE NATURAL, GOOD MORNING VIETNAM and YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES.

Stick Figure Studios

If you listen carefully, you'll notice that they're not actually the same song. The one in M:I-2 is basically a spoof of this one.

Jason Dolan

I don’t think it matters. I saw The Color of Money first and it made The Hustler a more fun watch for me knowing what Eddie had become.

Jason Dolan

That was a wonderful reaction, Cassie. I hope Tom and McQ get to see it.

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate you sharing your sister's story with us, Cassie. It was very emotional and brought tears to my eyes. My youngest sister was born in the mid-80s. My mother suffered a stroke during delivery which cut off oxygen to my baby sister for several minutes causing irreversible damage to her brain. She was born completely disabled and unable to speak. We travelled the world trying to find a way to reactivate her motor abilities but were unsuccessful. She struggled all her life, but we were all so blessed to have her in our lives. Unlike today, the world back then was different and unprepared to cater to people with disabilities, which added to our already challenging situation. I watched RAIN MAN when it first came out as a teenager and had a profound impact on me. My sister passed away from a lung infection during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She was 34. It was during that time that I came to discover this channel. It greatly helped me during my grief. I think of her every day. May she rest in peace. Thank you, Cassie and God bless you.

Night King01

Color of money is also a great cruise film though he is in a supporting role to Paul Newman. Watch the hustler first then color of money. Youll appreciate more.

Thomas Malley

When I first saw this movie I had no idea I had autism, but I knew I loved it. Incidentally this was the movie that got me obsessed about Hans Zimmer before his name was even broadly recognized. Now I watch the movie because I also have a brother who never knew about me, until we met when I was 20. It's taken years but he's finally coming around to understanding me a little better. Your sister is lucky to have someone like you.

Gideon James

Cassie, I almost forgot how much I missed the solo reactions of just you doing your thing. It's much more personable. More please, thank you!

Thomas Malley

I believe it was his first movie, period. And he either got nominated for an academy award or simply won that year.

Henry Graham

Funnily enough, this was almost the first Spielberg/Cruise collaboration. He spent months developing it before dropping the project, and he was surprisingly critical of the finished film, suggesting he would have made something more emotional out of it. I actually think the emotional restraint that Levinson shows is one of its strengths.

Michael Enos

Cassie..Hugs and warm friendship vibes. A very moving reaction. I hadn't seen this since I saw it 1st run in the theater. The first time I didn't know what to feel in the end. This time through I started to well up when they touched foreheads at the final hearing. Especially when I saw you well up. Best of wishes to you and your family. I hope by some circumstance you do get to talk to Tom..maybe by Zoom at least.. it would be touching for him to hear about how you related to the film because of your little sister. Thank you for this reaction. :)

Brian McGovern

He did a few movies before Rain Man. Apparently the movie A World Apart bought him to the attention of Barry Levinson who hired him for Rain Man. He was nominated for music but did not win.

djKENTO

I haven’t watched this film since I was a teenager, before I had my autism diagnosis and I just find it so hard to watch. There is a pacing and a feeling to it that puts me on edge. I was grinding my teeth by the time they got to the hotel. Don’t think this one is for me.

Dryfesands

A beautiful reaction to a beautiful movie. The leads are just incredible in this. Hoffman's performance deserves all the praise it got at the time and continues to get. Cruise though is magnificent. I think it's just about the best redemptive arc in movie history. It's an incredibly subtle and nuanced performance by an actor who was very young. The writing of it too is outstanding. The scene in the motel bathroom is a punch in the heart and an incredible way to kickstart the character's growth. I'm so glad you connected to it. You must, must *MUST* see "The Elephant Man". Love to you and your lovely family!

Steve Arnold

Thank you so much for taking us with you through this extraordinary and brilliant movie!

Brian Harris

I think it’s so interesting how both these men are isolated, but in completely different ways, and Raymond helps Charlie as much as Charlie helps him. Neither of them are able to fully shake their isolation by the end, and neither of them ever will. Raymond is forever marked by autism, Charlie by his father’s coldness. But there is hope for both of them to improve. And at the end, they both stand at the threshold of a new world, even though they still live in the same places. That last shot of Charlie standing alone at the train station … he’s utterly changed and as mystified by it as Raymond is.

Mike LL

It is a really special movie and a memorable reaction. It was stressful seeing Cassie so stressed during most of the movie, but that was how I could tell Cassie deeply loved the movie. Because seeing something or someone you care about in distress can produce that reaction, and that is love. Even in the outro with Cassie in tears, tears are expressions of love also. OK, ok, ok. As I have mentioned before, I would really like to see a reaction by Cassie to Abbot and Costello's Who's On First comedy routine. I believe the non-reaction by Cassie to Raymond reciting the skit was confirmation that Cassie has never seen it. I need that reaction! 😛

Ike

Short answer: No, we didn’t know much about autism in the 80’s. I knew that my mom - a speech therapist - worked with what she called “very special kids”, but I never understood it completely until I saw this movie. I will always be grateful to this movie for helping me understand. Tom Cruise is gracious in real life, but Charlie Babbitt is hard to love and it took me years to like him again. Unfair but true! A testament to his acting maybe.

William Bryan

As a person with high functioning Aspergers I can relate to Ray. People have called me rainman before lol

Mike Lemon

Kim Peek - The Real Rain Man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLpCfHH1OVU

Steven Ashford

Hope you got some quality time with your sister in Canada!

Doug R

My 4 yr old Grandson is non verbal Autistic. And the love of my life. We touch heads a lot just like at the end of the movie. I like to think we are reading each others minds.

Doug R

Fun fact....the first time I saw Rain Man was on a flight home from Europe. The scene in the airport was cut out.

Robert da Spruce

Beautiful reaction Cassie. While I really like the movie. And Dustin Hoffman’s performance was definitely worthy of the Academy award he won. I was most touched when you spoke about your sister. The love you and your family have for her is so evident. Thank you for sharing your experiences on having someone with special needs as a part of the family. Have a wonderful time for the rest of your trip!

rakeshldn

I think you'd love My left foot. The Movie. Not my actual left foot.

Doubting Thomas

Great time to see The Peanut Butter Falcon, another beautifully told story...

Canadianant

This was great Cassie. An acting clinic by both tom and Dustin. It's a testament to Tom's acting that you really hate him in the early parts of the movie. Great character arc through the movie reaching catharsis at the end. Thank you for sharing your family experience both during the movie and especially at the end. I'm sure its not easy to be as open as you are at times with the general public.Especially when dealing with something so personal but truly that's why we're here. The fact that movies can move us in such profound ways as is evident in your wrap-up is truly astounding. Thanks for being you

Robin Craft

For an early Dustin Hoffman film, I suggest "The Graduate". One of my favorite classics.

Blake Evans

To this day, I can't hear Etta James without thinking of the dancing scene.

Mike LL

The one Raymond had did not come from the box, because you are right, he already had it. He had picked it up from the floor after he dropped it. The waitress was bringing him more toothpicks and dropped 246 out of the box of 250.

Mike LL

I went into the movie thinking maybe this was her first time seeing Dustin Hoffman in a movie, then realized that of course she would have seen him as Captain Hook in Hook! And her Letterbxd confirms that watch.

My_Cousin_Mose

Thanks for another great reaction. I wasn't sure you were going to forgive Charlie and come to like him for a good while. He really does start off as a pretty crappy guy- and not just to Raymond. I think in the end what happened is what was best for Raymond. Charlie can't be there 24/7. I agree it was terrible that the father and doctors never told Charlie about Raymond. Both of them had their brother stolen from them. Charlie 100% would be a better person if he'd grown up knowing his brother, and Ray sure as crap seemed able to form a relationship. Your sister is lucky to have all of you and you guys are lucky to have her. I bet she has something to do with your great sense of empathy. Thank you for sharing that with all of us.

Alex Gorell

I’ve always wanted to see it but I never have. Now I have a reason too.

Gideon James

The film The Peanut Butter Falcon is a movie about a boy with Down Syndrome which i love. You should check it out, Cassie. It stars Shia Lebouf and Dakota Johnson. It was my favorite movie of 2019. A real hidden gem. Thanks

Tim Raths

Since people are recommending Dustin Hoffman films I will throw in a recommendation for Kramer vs Kramer.

Larry Darrell

Thank You for this. Thank You. -------------------------------- By the way, here is the Greatest Comedy Routine EVER. Abbott & Costello's "Who's on First" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ5vspsNS1g (-: PS: Just realized other people have done Reactions to this. That would be totally up to you Cass. ;-)

Terry Yelmene

This was hard... really hard on Cassie. This reaction was perhaps one of the most surprising, most unexpected, most touching reveals of who and why Cassie is...

Wally Hartshorn

One of the best reactions I have ever seen! When this movie came out, for many people it was their introduction to autism. (That's why the nurse in that one scene thought Charlie had written "artistic".) Of course, most people with autism are not like Raymond, but it at least helped get the conversation started.

Zachary K.

I am Sam (2001) with Sean Penn and Michele Pfeiffer, Dakota Fanning was a great one. Changed my whole viewpoint. Sean Penn was nominated for a Academy Award for it. You would love that one.

TT

Cassie, you mentioned in the outro that your experience with your younger sister changed you. Earlier, during the reaction, you asserted that Raymond had changed Charlie. Hearing your assertion and your own perspective enlightened me in a way I had not specifically considered before. It's another reason why I am an appreciative patron of Popcorn in Bed. Thank you for your authenticity, empathy, & wisdom. (and ditto for Carly!)

Mike Lemon

And the greatest spoof of that (Kids in the Hall)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFhvmCgs_L4

Dean Holt

So glad you liked this one I had a feeling you might not like it because of how he was for the 1st half of the movie. You also never have to apologise for getting emotional as i can see it’s very close to you heart with your sister. I have a uncle who is a little like Ray he will sit and watch the clothes washer, he likes the old TV Shows from the 80s The A Team is his favourite and he’s got them all on VHS as he doesn’t like DVD’s, he has certain things you have to do like if he’s in a room and you walk in he has to close the door for you so you have to leave it open. I can tell she is very special to you just like my uncle is to me.

R Harper

Why are YouTube ads breaking in on this reaction? Happened on Minority Report also?

Mike Lemon

Unconventional Hoffman recommendation- Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007). Not the best movie in the world, but it is fun, plus it introduces the Congreve Cube.

Philip Alan

I see spoof and I think Weird Al! haha. Definitely a cover (then later sampled) from the original. Which was written by James Crawford back in the 1950s. The one I love love is The Belle Stars version/cover. (which was featured here in Rain Man)

Alan Kobb

I think you need to scold your husband for letting you go all these years without seeing this! It's a beautiful movie, and I'm very happy that you got to watch it.

MertzRocks

That was his other Best Actor Oscar BTW, besides for this. I have not seen it but that's on me. I would also recommend The Graduate for which he got his first Oscar nomination, and most especially Little Big Man! Possibly Hoffman's most fun dramatic role and my personal favorite DH movie.

MertzRocks

From unconventional to a 'nearly conventional' (lol) Hoffman recommendation: Little Big Man. It won't bring as many tears as this (a few, for sure) but I think it's DH's most fun dramatic role and it is my very favorite Hoffman movie. Also, I can't find anyone who has reacted to it yet! It's a great movie with a stellar supporting cast.

FranciscoGios

Yes, that’s why I like this movie. I believe people that are mentally challenged can also change other peoples for the better. And I didn’t know you had another sister other than Carly, and I’m sure your other sister is lucky to have you guys as siblings.

Gábor Árki

I've been reading it somewhere that Google started adding ads to unlisted videos even on non monetized channels, that hasn't been the case so far.

Aaron Hawkins

This is a very personal film for me. I am on the autism spectrum. I watched this film for many years before I was diagnosed. I always loved it even before I was diagnosed. After I was diagnosed, the film and the character of Raymond gained extra significance for me. Raymond was, at some point, going to be mentally disabled, goofy, and happy. He was pretty much going to be portrayed how almost all people who were considered "retarded" in TV and film. But Dustin Hoffman insisted that Raymond should be an autistic savant and be withdrawn. Bless him for that choice because that made SUCH a difference. Rain Man came out in 1988. Incidentally, the year I was born. Anyway, up to that point mainstream or public awareness/understanding of autism and people on the spectrum wasn't very high. Certainly not in pop culture or media. But Rain Man became the highest grossing film of 1988 and won several Oscars, including Best Picture so it was kind of a game changer. That made such a difference for people who are autistic or who are on the spectrum. Raymond gave people a face and a personality that they could remember and connect to and Hoffman's portrayal and the film itself helped or gave many people a chance or a reason to be aware of, understanding of, and to empathize with people like Raymond and people like myself. We are the way we are with both our struggles and our gifts. Our challenges and our growths. Our unique minds and big hearts. And for that and more, I'm very grateful for this film and the significance it has had on me personally or on anyone else.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

That was an amazing reaction to a great movie, and this is one of those movies that's come to mean a lot more to me as I've gotten older too. As a kid I liked it but definitely couldn't appreciate it like now, family can be hard but also so worth it. It also did a lot to bring attention to Autism, I don't believe it was very well known at the time. I'm also on the spectrum but I guess high functioning, I wasn't ever diagnosed when I was young and not gonna lie, things were tough because I was basically just expected to "stop being weird", I would be very good at certain things like math and drawing, loved history and still do, but socially I was completely lost. Luckily I had a few good friends and family who helped me, and then I joined the Army and that also helped me, actually FORCED me to get out of my shell lol, and I met a lot of great friends there too. Not long ago my little nephew was diagnosed autistic, he's nonverbal but he's such a beautiful, funny kid, we love to make him laugh. And I think it's so funny he loves the family pack of dogs just like I did when I was kid, I'd spend all day with them sometimes, especially before I started to make friends, they were my friends. It can be tough with him sometimes of course, but you're so right, they are special, this kid's laugh is so pure it's contagious and I love to hear it. His older sisters all take care of him so well, and I'm glad people understand more about autism now as opposed to when I grew up.

Sage Antone

This is the best reaction you've ever posted and I will leave it at that.

Sage Antone

If you look it up on YouTube, Dustin Hoffman receives like a 1 minute standing ovation when he wins the Best Actor Oscar for Rain Man. (The film won Best Picture).

Thoko

Does she have more than one sister? I haven't watched this reaction yet, but my first thought is that Carly doesn't seem like she has autism.

David Collins

Wow, I had forgotten. 18 year old me had it pretty bad for Valeria Golino. She was so fantastic in this. And Dustin Hoffman of course is always amazing. This makes me want to go back and see Outbreak again. Terribly underrated movie. Those were my first two Dustin Hoffman movies and he couldn't have played two more different people in them. Another great movie with similar subject matter, that you're going to love in a similar way, is Benny and Joon. Shocked you've never seen it, it's right up your wheelhouse.

Kim Brink

Please watch "I Am Sam" also similar subject matter. Starring Sean Penn, Michelle Pfeiffer and Dakota Fanning.

Erik Daniel

A special movie and a very special watch along. Thanks Cassie.

Pickupthepieces76

Thank you for sharing your emotion and story with us. It made the reaction a special one on top of a special movie. It was probably one of the first main stream movies to give the public an insight into autisme. Creating awareness is always good to help create understanding. And you just added something to that with this reaction. So thank you for that. Also props to Tom and Dustin and the creators for an absolute gem of a movie.

Rick Williams

Damn Cassie. I made it through the movie fine. And then you have to go and make me tear up. Never apologize for getting emotional and expressing your feelings. That's what makes you special. The way you feel so deeply. Most people are afraid to feel that deeply. And would not be able to show it and express it like you do. Maybe it is because of your little sister that you and Carly are so caring and sweet. You two have been blessed. Thank you for such a moving reaction.

Mike McLaughlin

Best reaction ever. Love is what gets us through our lives. We all have love in us, it is just being in the life circumstances that brings it out. It makes us go deep.. and for that, it makes us better and stronger. Maybe, that is what your sister gives you. and she gets you back in return. Your vulnerability was on full display. Of course, this movie won the Oscar, as well as Dustin Hoffman. Your family and your sister win the same for how you live your lives. Its a high bar to live up to, it tests us everyday, and it run deep as the ocean. Best wishes on your family gathering. Celebrate and share in your strength and love for one another. God's blessing upon you and yours.

Jorge De La Torriente

Hi Cassie! I don't know if you'll every read this message...but I loved and really appreciated your reaction!! Our daughter has autism and she's now 20 years old. She's still my princess and she has some amazing talents...like memory recall on event dates, highly skilled yoyo tricks, and crocheting. But what we most worry about his if she'll ever be able to have a romantic relationship and get married one day, have children, or even be able to live independently. If you could, would you and Carly please pray for us in this regard. Love you guys!!

Super Powered Design (Jim)

WOW. That was so special. Thank your for sharing about your sister. You made me CRY... but cheers of joy. THANK YOU so much about opening up. I hope a lot of people see this edit on YT. I think you will change a lot of lives with this. AMAZING!

David Freese

I feel and have the same worries about my 15 year old daughter. Also I failed miserably with relationships because of my autism so I'll prey for both to have the greatest joys of life because connection with people is hard with us and if they find it it'll be the most happy I'll be since my daughter was born. I bet you can say the same 🙏

David Freese

You're in a great group of parents, grandparents, and older autism suffers that pray for everyone that has autism but enjoy every part of their day and life.

David Freese

Thank your mom for the great work she did in the 80s with limited resources cause of misunderstanding of autistic kids.

David Freese

We are all with you. Your part of the good hearted autism army and family. Hope you are doing well and living everything to the fullest.

Ike

And thank you. It was a different time, David. We did not know as much as we know now and thankfully, there are more tools, more resources, more funding and greater understanding than forty years ago.’

Joshua s. Jackson

Great reaction as always, but is anybody else getting commercials during the uncut videos.

Anthony Perez

"The little moments that make up this big story". That is what life is, isn't it. And I am more appreciative of life, of people in general ever since I started watching movies with Cassie and Carly. Heck I don't swear as much either. And especially when talking to my dog, I say "Oh my goodness" a lot. So once again..thank you Popcorn in Bed. You've made me a less grumpy old man.

John Cranberry

This reaction is why I love Cassie. Always.
