[YT Edit] For Love of the Game (1999)

I've said it a couple of times, but now that you're done with Rocky, I really hope someday you check out the movie Girlfight. It stars Michelle Rodriguez in her first role and it is a boxing movie as well. She is fantastic in it and the movie is very underrated. This movie was directed by Sam Raimi, who also directed the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Not to be too sure of myself, but there's no way you'd like his most famous movies, the ultra-violent and gross-out Evil Dead trilogy (*maybe* the third movie, Army of Darkness, but probably not), but I do think you'd enjoy his fun and thrilling 1995 Western The Quick and the Dead, with Gene Hackman, as well as his Fargo-esque thriller A Simple Plan, starring Bill Paxton. You might also be into his horror/thriller The Gift, but his earlier superhero movie Darkman might be too Batman (1989) for you. He also made Oz, the Great and Powerful, which I haven't seen. After the movie I watched the deleted scenes on the Blu-ray (also on the DVD) and there are some interesting additional scenes with the friend who gets traded to the Yankees, both before the game (when Billy is walking onto the field, they have a conversation) and after (the guy comes by to congratulate him in the locker room). The movie's probably long enough but they're great to see, as is an extended version of the scene where Jane is ice skating (it made me think of Rocky and Adrian at the ice rink), and the one where Billy decides to sleep with the masseuse. The last one, and the original version of the scene where Jane shows up late at the hotel bar after their first date (she says f...etch, not "screw") were clearly cut so that the movie could be PG-13 instead of R-rated. You can also see an alternate edit of the scene where Billy invites Jane to Florida and she declines where they introduce Jane's daughter earlier, before Billy knows she exists.

The Guardian had me until that goofy ending when the victim of a rescue implies a ghost story.

For More Great Baseball Movies: Moneyball (Bratt Pitt, drama) A League of Their Own (about the women's baseball league) The Sandlot (classic, but you may have already seen it) Fever Pitch (Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon, romcom)

Bill Bowman

Very glad you discovered this underappreciated gem. It has been a favorite for years and everyone that I recommend seeing it has loved the film. It is great you are trying new styles and expanding your movie universe, but this is your wheelhouse. I hope that you make it a regular feature to have a rom/com or romance classic monthly. There are so many classic and forgotten movies that you will laugh, cry, and enjoy. This type of movie is my favorite reaction that you have and share with your audience.

Mike Carey

Another potential baseball movie: Trouble with the curve(Clint Eastwood, Justin Timberlake)

Daniel Hofer

If you’re looking for a basketball movie, i recommend “Hoosiers” (gene hackman)

Bill Bowman

Glad and happy that you found this overlooked gem of a movie I have recommended this film to people and no one that has watched has not had the same reaction. There are 2 other movies that are unjustly forgotten that I think both of you would enjoy: A Little Romance with a very young Diane Lane, Laurence Olivier, and with the backdrop of the romantic European countryside. The other movie is from a few years ago Gifted, staring Chris Evans and McKenna Grace (Paige from Young Sheldon ).
