Excuse me guys, could you tell me the best way to get back on the expressway?

Ok this was ridiculous, laugh out loud, not as slapstick as space balls but not clever like Big Lebowski either! Very quotable, very want to die of second hand embarrassment-able. Another classic off my list! Hope you enjoy!

[Full Reaction] National Lampoon's Vacation

Comments

Clay F

Years ago, the line "Daddy says I'm the best at it" would ocassionally be edted out on TV, even on a cable or premium channel.

Todzilla

Can't wait! This has been on my "Cassie Bucket List" forever!

Brian McGovern

Christmas Vacation I think you will like. European Vacation was a bit crass and not as enjoyable. Christmas seems to have become a classic, next to Vacation. Do not watch the remake of Vacation. That was woeful. Only a handful of scenes were decent. Christina Applegate at the college frat party and Chris Hemsworth, we’re the only good scenes in that movie. The little kid was a sociopath and not an endearing character at all. EDIT: never mind about Christmas vacation.Just saw your intro.

David Zabel

I still liked European Vacation very much, but the original is a national treasure for sure. Vegas Vacation and the remake are trash.

Richard Bourne

Larry, I am probably going to tick you off on my comments on this movie. I LOVED "Animal House" from National Lampoon, but in many ways this movie fell short of what it could have been IMHO. There is a lot a funny and great stuff in here, but also some disturbing for the time stuff and just not funny horrible things. Did you ever see the movie poster for this? Chevy Chase had a ridiculous photo shopped Arnold Schwarzenegger body... I remember it as my brother had the poster in our shared bedroom when we were kids at the time. I was less impressed.

Adam Grunther

I absolutely adore this movie. Say what you will about Chevy Chase as a person but he is absolutely hilarious in this. Every scene with Clark and his family is absolutely delightful. The absolute insanity that they deal with is just classic. My favorite scene has to be the car scene in the rain where Clark just loses it and screams at his family. He’s well meaning and kind of a moron but even he has his limits. I also love the entire Wally World section at the end with John Candy as the security guard. It’s a really sweet ending to such a fun and hilarious film.

Brian McGovern

I know. That young kid was such a disgusting character. I know writers like to make the children cheeky and rebellious, but they completely went WAY over the top wanting to kill his older brother and thinking it was funny. I don't care if that spoils the remake for others. Does not deserve to be watched. Go look for christina applegate flat party on you tube. Guarantee it is the closest thing to a laugh in that movie.

London Davis

"I got laid off when they closed that asbestos factory, and wouldn't you know it, the army cuts my disability pension because they said that the plate in my head wasn't big enough." Cousin Eddie 😂

Ian Cano

The songs Holiday Road and Little Boy Sweet are awesome in this movie.

Peter Guertin

Love this movie! Christmas vacation is my all time favorite. You HAVE to watch that at Christmas if you haven’t seen it yet!

Richard Bourne

As am I. I was in a frat house in college so Animal House is near and dear to me. They took it to the extreme, but there some scenes I do identify with. As a kid, we did take some family road trips, so I also get Vaction on that.

Larry Darrell

Richard, I wonder if they'll ever understand The trials of a freedom seeking man So have a round on me my friend What else can we do You know I always love ya, but I think it's time that we flew -- Lindsey Buckingham

Richard Bourne

We are going to disagree, but I am feeling I am going to like and respect you as we do. Good quote.

Richard Bourne

I'll reply with perhaps an overly harsh one from Winston Churchill... "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." My tempering of this is that disagreement need not create enemies, and in fact that is a sad result of disagrement on all but the most major truly biniary issues which are few. There is middle ground and comminalities to be found if you make the effort to seek it, not to mention so many issues really don't matter that much. Anyway, America was a nation created to have debate, and that is a heathly thing.

Mike LL

Cassie, very very astute of you in your introduction you compared this movie to National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles as other “things that go wrong movies” as all three movies were written by the great John Hughes. The looks on your face as you couldn't believe what was on the screen was priceless. *John Hughes, who also directed Planes, Trains and Automobiles also wrote The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Home Alone

Josh Phillips

Love me a good road trip movie! How about Smokey and the Bandit for the next one? 😆

Canadianant

Love the combination of Cassie equal parts horrified and laughing out loud at the same time. Definitely need to watch Christmas vacation in December

Jason Mackey

You absolutely must get to Cleveland! Why? 40,000 sq ft of candy and popcorn with 2 mini golf courses in one land of fun and gloriousity!

Jimmy H

Eddie's daughter was Jane Krakowski from Ally Mcbeal and 30 Rock.

zynjams

this movie is trash compared to Christmas vacation. A classic

N M

Cleveland is where to go if you have any complicated heart condition. Cleveland Clinic. Ranked #1 for Cardiology by US News and World Report since forever.

Jason Mackey

Absolutely! And I can confirm that every possible accolade is right on.

Celeste McAllister

Western poll winner "Maverick" is starting to make sense now! :)

Philip Alan

Cassie, you're too pure. "What is it?" (weed in box). That's why we are all here.

Philip Alan

Your face throughout this movie was spot on hilarious. haha!

Sam R.

Absolutely loved that so many laughs I knew you would say this is too much when they had aunt Edna on the roof 😄😄😄

Andrew

The best of both worlds 😂 https://youtu.be/TRZoZ6p1s-k

Patrick Flanagan

Sure, most major amusement parks close for 2 weeks in the middle of the summer, that's perfectly believable.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

For me the Vacation movies rank 3-1-reboot-2, ignore the rest. Christmas Vacation is actually my favorite Christmas movie too. This one, first one, I love because it was the first and Chevy Chase was at his best in this, in terms of physical comedy, and I can also relate, every one of my family vacations when I was a kid, kind of sucked, didn't go as planned, but also had some really fun moments. The reboot I like because it was fairly funny, but also because it was an homage to the original, which most reboots don't do. European Vacation was okay, had some funny bits. The Vegas one was atrocious.

Stan the Man

Ha! You subscribe to this patreon as well? Your the 2nd person I’ve run into that’s a supporter of both PiB & You me & the Movies. Interesting

Shawn Kildal

Cousin Eddie's daughter is Jane Krakowski from 30 Rock

Shawn Kildal

I am still hoping for one of my favorite comedies Smokey and the Bandit!!! The ultimate road trip comedy movie. Burt Reynolds at his finest and Jackie Gleason will have Cassie in tears!

Allen Bond

I didn't realize this was a horror comedy, until Cassie watched it.

Brian

European Vacation was my favorite - "Would you like it in the can?"

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

This, Caddyshack, and American Graffiti beat out Bull Durham?! Lol, even Cassie is telling us she wanted Bull Durham. Oh well.

Tara

Wally World is Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA. Just North of Los Angeles. When I was growing up, I lived a few miles from the park and spent weekends there with my friends. It was THE place to get summer jobs in high school. I kept getting one year passes that were about $40 in the mid 80’s. It was a blast and so weird when I recognized Wally World when I saw the movie.

Darren Hill

Cassie would love American Graffiti. Only issue it would be a tough edit with all the classic music.

Darren Hill

Wasn't sure how you would go with this but so glad you enjoyed it. Particularly your reaction during the Christie Brinkley moments. You'de look pretty good as well behind the wheel of that Ferrari.

Tim Raths

Bull Durham might as well be a Popcorn Pick of the Month because I don’t think it will ever win a poll.

My_Cousin_Mose

If this was a more serious movie I might have issue with just how awful of a father/husband Clark is but its a silly comedy. Helen reallly forgave him too easily for everything at the hotel and the dude about got them all killed multiple times. As it stands though its just a dumb fun movie and the "run" scene at the end was really fun to watch with you.

Steve Holton

“The Revolution” the final roller coaster with the loop where the family is arrested was the first roller coaster I ever rode. Sad when Valencia was destroyed by a nuclear blast during season 6 of “24”. Corona local Keifer Sutherland must have gone to Disneyland growing up.

Tara

I love The Revolution and always tried to raise my arms through the loop. I also loved when they ran Colossus backwards. With the season pass, there were times when there wouldn’t be any lines and my friends and I would just go on the coasters over and over.

Dioskur

Google Christie Brinkley Goldbergs to see her do the same scene at age 65 and be amazed

zynjams

so many great movies get passed over because of these polls , I dont know why people vote for the darkest unenjoyable movies and call them important cinema

Stick Figure Studios

It makes sense, of course, but it's interesting to me how today's younger viewers know Chase -- if they recognize him at all -- from COMMUNITY (which he was terrific in BTW) because to people of my generation (or older) who came of age in the '80s, he was a megastar. From his debut on Saturday Night Live through his VACATION/FLETCH movies and beyond, Chase was a comedic legend. At this point in his career we've probably seen the last of him as he's successfully alienated virtually everyone he's worked with through a**hole behavior, but when he was good, he was great and Clark Griswold is probably his signature role: the well-intentioned but overly ambitious and bumbling family man who takes his failures in stride until it becomes too much for him and he explodes in a hilarious rant. That scene where he finally loses it and yells at his family in the car ("Don't touch!") is so funny that they made it even longer, louder and funnier in CHRISTMAS VACATION. For my money, that one is probably the best of these movies with this one a close second (Randy Quaid's portrayal of cousin Eddie is brilliant in both but particularly in that one). Good job recognizing John Candy and Anthony Michael Hall, but you understandably missed Bill Murray's brother Brian Doyle Murray (from GHOSTBUSTERS 2 and GROUNDHOG DAY) as the man behind the counter at the campground and the offscreen voice of the police officer asking Roy Wally if he wanted to book the Griswold family was director Harold Ramis (a.k.a. Egon from GHOSTBUSTERS and the director of GROUNDHOG DAY). Also, just in case you didn't know, the music playing during the slow-mo running scene at the end is from a 1981 British film called CHARIOTS OF FIRE. It's based on a true story about runners and it won best picture at the Oscars. Its main theme song composed by the late great vangelis has become iconic (much like the Rocky theme) and it is used here to hysterical effect.

Tim Raths

Instead of voting for something she will like, people like to vote on something that will make her uncomfortable and disturbed.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

@Darren. I suppose that's my point: People thinking they know Cassie better than she knows herself. @Tim #1. Indeed :(

Mike Lemon

"Grape" flavor is Concord Grape and is pretty close in flavor to the ones in my yard. Much different than the varieties in the store.

Pepe M

National Lampoons vacation is a popular movie but it is not good, in my opinion. When i was a kid i like Chevy Chase but now, after too many years he seems like a horrible comedy actor (i recognize that humor is something subjective feeling for each person) but Chevy Chase career was very limited for one reason: He wasn't a good actor. Dan Harmon rescues him for the amazing tv show Community and Chase did his best performance as Pierce Hawthorne. All we love "Spengler", but in this case Harold Ramis made a movie with bad jokes and Chase is unbearable for me. I take this opportunity to say that hopefully one day we can see Cassie's reaction to National Lampoon Animal House, a wonderful comedy that was the first of a new genre. And... John Belushi.

Shawn Kildal

If Cassie loved Eugene Levy and John Candy in this, then SPLASH with them and also Tom Hanks would be a good bet as well

Shawn Kildal

The Commodores is a 70s RB / Funk group lead by Lionel Richie. Their big hits are "Brick House", "I'm Easy (as a Sunday morning)", "Three times a lady" just to name a few

Michael J

Love this movie. Sound odd, but makes me kind of miss em now. We still do, but friends... I kind of hoped would be more with daughter and mom. But that story is a tad deeper one. Not that we cant, maybe more years from now?

Larry Darrell

So many Sight Gags, in this. You don't catch everything the first viewing. It was years down the road, before I noticed in the beginning when they are doing the dishes, Ellen is scraping food off the plates. Then she hands them to Clark, and he just wipes them with a rag and puts them in the cupboard, right over an open and empty dishwasher. Thanks for watching. This is one of my favorites. Just a fun Hour and a Half to sit back and see yourself or people you know in these characters, and laugh about it. If you can't do that, then maybe you're just thinking too much or taking life too seriously. This film is a Classic and it needed to be seen. Some folks would rather Cassie had watched something else, but She is on a film journey right now. She uses us as Road Signs to figure out where she wants or needs to go. Some want to be the Road Closed sign that Cassie will just drive her Family Truckster right through. And some may think she'll go flying through the air for 50 yards, or she'll lose her vanity case, or Aunt Edna will die. But, I think She'll make it to Wally World and it won't be closed. Perhaps before She gets there, She won't even need the Road Signs anymore. This is Her journey and however She wants to navigate there, I'll be along for the ride. Because getting there is half the Fun. You know that.

Larry Darrell

In the intro, she said she had seen Christmas Vacation on TV and wasn't sure she had seen all of it. Definitely worth watching from beginning to end. Almost every scene has quotable lines, right from the first. "Take it Russ..."

Eric

Chevy Chase was well suited for this role. Another funny Chevy Chase movie is Funny Farm. He plays a writer who wants to move out to the country for inspiration. He and his wife buy a house out in a rural area, which is great, but a lot went wrong with the house, and other things. Very funny! It was also made back in the 1980s. I was 23 in 1983 when this movie came out. I didn't see it right away, but saw it a few years later.

Celeste McAllister

That was almost painful to watch the OMG meter was off the scale on this one! Poor Clark couldn't face it they should have flown out to SoCal,Helen was over doing it with the patience, cousin Eddie was a creep the tourist traps were an exaggeration of the truth, the small town locals saw them coming a mile away..National Lampoon's Vacation or "We should have stayed home"..I would have put aunt Edna on a bus to Phoenix first opportunity..the story is proof that Murphys law is a real thing!,I'd say this film has a Farcical type of humor..I'm enjoying it after the fact lol..

Bubba Fett

Behind christmas, this is probabaly my favorite of the vacation movies. Ramis made a ton of movies, mostly pretty great including caddyshack, dangerfield is amazing. Another favorite is probably stripes. You'll see many of the same actors across his movies. Chase, candy, Murray and more.

Jason Mangen

I can’t believe you dissed the 1980’s Jack Tripper shorts.

WastedPo

Funny Farm is very underrated. It's one of Chevy Chase's best movies, and no one ever talks about it. (Though I remember Roger Ebert actually loved it.)
