Hey guys! Here in our August "Noms of Oscars Past" Poll, the year I drew was 1985. For the first time in one of these polls, I had not seen or reacted to any of the nominees. I actually had never even heard of any of these films, although someone did send a copy of Amadeus. From the sounds of it, this might be a runaway poll, but who knows! We are also having out Summer Blockbuster:Comedy poll this week too so look out for that!

Why is there no "All Of The Above" option? ALL of these movies are "Must See." Looks like Amadeus is winning. But Cassie really needs to see "A Soldier's Story." I think no one is voting for it because no one has seen it. For the record, it is not a war movie.

Agreed. Cassie has mentioned that she likes crime solving and detective work. I think she would also love Denzel’s Courage Under Fire.

One of the few years where I have seen all the Best Picture nominees. It's a shame more people do not know about A Soldier's Story. I think it was called a niche movie in another comment -- it's set in a very specific place & time and revolves around a very specific incident. It doesn't give us epic sweep, foreign locales, lilac wigs or cultural celebrities of the other movies. What it does give us is solid writing (based on play that won 1982 Pultizer Prize for Drama), a terrific director (Norman Jewison) and fantastic performances from several cast members (Adolph Caesar, Denzel Washington, Larry Riley, and ohh, just the best role of Howard E. Rollins Jr's career). It's sharp, deep, tragic, angry, proud. Terrific movie, with ingredients (crime drama, investigation, lawyering) that Cassie likes, and complex and memorable characters. And a Glenn Miller march for the wrap-up. How's about them apples.
