Hey friends, here is my reaction to October Sky. This was the winner of the Mother's Day Poll of some of my moms favorite movies. Oh my gosh, this movie pulled at every heart string I have, over and over. I really loved it despite me crying through the majority of it, some of those moments just hit so hard. It was a really special movie and I am so glad to have seen it.

* I watched this on Prime Video by the way!

First! Ok goodnight!

Robert da Spruce

Love this movie! Can’t wait to watch your reaction Cassie!

Matt

I watched this for the first time last week then had to watch it again with my mum, such a good film cant wait to see your reaction to it

Philip G.

It's pretty cool that the fathers day movie was Hunt for red OCTOBER and your mothers day movie is OCTOBER sky. Now tell me they were married in October lol

Matt Skeens

I’m glad you’re reacting to this movie not just because it’s great but as a rare movie that doesn’t just mock Appalachia. I’m from the coalfields of Southwestern Virginia (not WV) and it depicts coal country Appalachia and Appalachians pretty accurately without demonizing, mocking, etc.

Matt Skeens

I am the first male and generation of males in my family to never have worked in a mine. My great grandfather told me never to. My grandfather told me never to. And my uncle and stepfather, who is currently roofbolting in his deep mine in the hoot owl shift in McClure, VA as I type this. It’s a respectable profession that fueled this country’s growth from electricity to steel production. BUT those mining companies plundered what little we had in this massive impoverished region of the country, killed/maimed miners with countless with black lung, and poisoned our land, water, and air in the process. I’m proud to be from a multi gen coal miner/mining family but coal has been dying for decades and we’re left with even less than we had. Which was nothing. The first food stamp recipients were miners. The War on Poverty was launched here 60 years ago and we’re still drowning in it.

Matt Skeens

With all of that said I got to meet some of the “Rocket Boys”. There were more than 4. The crew was shrunken down dor the film. Also, according to one of the Homer’s dad wasn’t really the a-hole he was portrayed as. He wasn’t the biggest cheerleader but mainly because he was just a busy mine foreman who was busy. Not the dream crusher like he is in the film. Though they did say the school admin were not big fans of them for awhile but like it shows they did start to support them!

Stick Figure Studios

Good film. Joe Johnston (who also directed HIDALGO, THE ROCKETEER, JUMANJI and HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS) tends to make very old-fashioned, feel-good movies.

Rose

I saw this years ago and was so impressed with Jake Gyllenhaal. Super talented. In fact, his film debut was in "City Slickers" with Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, Bruno Kirby, Jack Palance - who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Curly. You will really enjoy this one, too.

LightsCameraJake

Cassie, my dreams of you watching this have come true. What do i do now? xD

Brian Harris

Amen, Matt. Coal people have made unthinkable sacrifices for this country’s development, and have received almost nothing but scorn, condescension, and abandonment for it. They’ve been forgotten by cultural and political elites and driven into rank poverty by corporate vampires. They’re among the toughest, proudest, most unfairly-treated people in America, and I wish more folks understood that.

Shawn Kildal

I remember renting this at Blockbuster only because the other movies I wanted to see weren't available. Popped the movie in and realized after the first couple minutes of it that this movie was going to be special. Just like ROCKY, very inspirational and tugs at the heart. So glad we get to watch this with you. BTW, the actor who played the principal of the high school was in a MY COUSIN VINNY. He played J.T, the guy who swindled Marisia Tomei's character in the pool game.

Michael Threapleton

Gyllenhaal was great in Donnie Darko (2001). Unlikely to be a poll winner but check it out if you want something different.

Gábor Árki

1999, what a great year for movies. One of the best is cinema history. There are easily two dozen movies worth watching from this year but October Sky is definitely among them. It's one of those movies that can get me really emotional and inspired. Even though I've seen it probably 3 times already, these feelings were even amped up by Cassie's reaction. Coal mining is still around. Depending on the quality it is mostly burnt in power plants to produce electricity. It is probably the dirtiest solution for generating energy. Better quality coal however is essential for making steel. I'm from a miner family. Both of my grandfathers worked for a local mine. On my dad's side as mining engineer, taking a night school after WW2. On my mom's side as logistics coordinator. My dad always told me that he was warned not to become a miner and he even wowed he will never go down under after my grandfather took him to the shafts once as a teenager. Yet he became a mechanic and worked a decade underground before taking a company sponsored distance education course and became an IT system administrator. It was great timing because all the mines closed a few years later. The only time I've ever been to a mine was on a holiday trip a few years ago in Hallstatt, Austria. There is a salt mine you can visit in a guided tour. It was a very unique and memorable experience. I'm sure there are some opportunities like this in the US too worth checking out. Regarding the space race, sure it was prestige as well. The two superpowers wanted to show their technical superiority and also couldn't let the space owned by their competitor. But at the same time it was also very much part of a technology and arms race. Intercontinental ballistic missiles are just rockets after all, not to mention all the other advancements in science and technology that were also used in weapons development before making their way to the consumer market. If (or more likely when) you are continuing with space exploration themed movies, The Right Stuff (1983) would be a great candidate. It is following the early days of the American space program that was mainly put into motion by the launch of Sputnik in 1957.

TinCan Cosmanaut

Gee Golly I can always count on Cassie for a good cry

Rose

I have never watched it bc of that creepy looking bunny but I should check it out.

Grinznmore

Top shelf story telling. Tears are the car wash for the soul. This movie will be in my medicine cabinet. Cassie, thank you for sharing and please pass along my best wishes to your mom and family. Happy Mother’s Day.

Damien beatty

My father and step Grandfather on my fathers side were both coal miners, but I have other members in my distant relations who were coal miners as well, one who died of Black Lung Disease which is from breathing coal dust, and one died in a mine collapse in the late 70's. Coal mining is one of the most dangerous jobs. Now there are actually three types of mines Underground, Open Pit Mining which is where my father worked in Wyoming, and strip mining which are huge miles long in Wyoming. Wyoming has been the largest producer of coal in the U.S. for many many years. Every one of the family members I met that were coal miners too a person said never get into it, find another path. I did work for a couple summers at one and I just remember showering after work and seeing the bottom of the tub turn black from coal dust and having scrapes and bruises from the work. I proud of the work they did because many die at mines every year, but I am glad I went to college so I wouldn't have to do it myself.

Damien beatty

P.S. there is an excellent movie from (1987) called Matewan which is also a true story about mining with the same actor (Chris Cooper) who played Homers dad in October Sky, it also has Darth Vaders voice actor James Earl Jones. It is very eye opening.

Art of Free Speech

I love the backstory! Thank you for that. In almost all of the movies we get to watch with Cassie that are based on real stories, it's so awesome that someone in our large, but tight, group knows about someone or something depicted in the films. As much as I respect coalminers and all they've done, I'm still happy to hear you made it out of the mines. I'm the first Ph.D. in my family, and I know the kind of pride being the first of your family to accomplish something means. Thanks for sharing all of that!

David

Happy Mothers day to you and your Mom!!

salim alvarez

yup, I love that movie is beautiful but will steal lot of tears from you....is very inspiring and for me hits hard home....the father -son dynamic was way too close to mine in my teenager years.....

Tara

Awww Hidalgo… I love that movie and of course I think of Viggo who played Aragorn from LOTR. The other movies are great as well.

Carol_White

Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down? That's not my department, says Wernher von Braun.

Alex Gorell

This is one of my favorite movies. I remember seeing it in theaters with my Dad when I was young. In fact I think it was one my first movies I saw in a theatre.

Tara

Another movie that I saw when it first came out in 1999 and hadn’t seen it since. The only thing I remembered was that Jake Gyllenhaal was in it and I remembered the scene when the town came out to watch. I didn’t remember anything else. It was great to watch it again with you Cassie. For those of you who grew up around coal mining, please correct me if I’m wrong. Cassie, I believe the coal mining company provided housing for their employees, so when Homer’s dad was injured, they may have lost their home because the family didn’t have anyone working for the company at the time. That’s why Homer decided to leave school to work at the mine so his brother wouldn’t have to and lose his football scholarship and they were able to keep their home until the dad was able to return. Until next time…🍿

Mingo Wayama

I second The Right Stuff. If you haven't already seen it, you might also enjoy Hidden Figures, about the significant role that women (and African-American women, at that) played in the space program.

Alex Gorell

I didn't grow up around coal mining but That is correct. Coal Companies owned entire towns and only people who worked there and their families got to stay there so when the father was hurt someone in the family needed to go work the mine so they could keep their home.

Steven Ashford

I knew this movie Would invoke full range of emotions. Great story. Mining has come along way. A lot of it’s automated now but obviously people still have to go down in the mines. Did you say you were watching from the earth to the moon? Are you reacting to that or is it just for your own personal knowledge? Oh Coincidentally Sputnik was the same weight of uranium needed to make a nuclear bomb. Not so subtle. And on a sidenote when I was a kid I put nickel carbide down a hole and filled it with water which makes Acetylene. I went to light it Woke up 5 feet from the whole covered in mud. Boys!

Gábor Árki

She has seen Hidden Figures according to https://popcornrequests.com/

Gábor Árki

I don't think she has seen or watching From the Earth to the Moon, but many of us suggested it when Cassie reached out for a chat on Discord after watching Apollo 13. So I'm pretty sure it is on her radar and given it is a miniseries probably we can expect a reaction one day.

Steven Ashford

She mentioned it in this reaction that she started watching it unless I miss heard her

Steven Ashford

Yep. Just went back and made sure I heard her correctly. She says she started from the earth to the moon documentary. Hoping she’s reacting to it!

Brent Petty

Yes, there are still coal miners today. Conditions and safety have improved. Are there still accidents? Yes.

brooke atkins

Never seen this. Will have to come back and watch later. I’m guessing now that Cassie knows fatal attraction has sex in it she won’t be watching it 🤦‍♀️ Such a bummer cause it is a great suspenseful edge of your seat. I think she’d like it minus the short sex scene in the beginning.

Gábor Árki

Yeah, you are right. Found that part too, somehow I missed it during my view earlier. She said: "From the Earth to the Moon? That's a documentary I started." I would also be sad if we are not getting a reaction to this miniseries.

Brent Petty

As someone who grew up in West Virginia, it is not "the University of West Virginia." It is "West Virginia University."

Brent Petty

Homer Hickam was the speaker at my brother's high school graduation.. Every graduate got an autographed copy of the book. I was very jealous. :) Another tie-in: My speech professor in college was a college classmate of Miss Riley. He spoke very highly of her.

Celeste McAllister

Happy mother's day to all mom's,we are blessed...Been wanting to watch October Sky for years, glad I waited until now.. Okay that got my feels on pretty much all levels, the redemption of Homer and his dad tore me up,I have tear soaked tissues all over the coffee table lol..Give this movie ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Follow October Sky with "The Right Stuff" Cassie before "From the Earth to the Moon"..That library book was the 1865 Jules Verne novel of the same name..

Steven Ashford

IKR. Hoping she’s just keeping it a secret and accidentally let the cat out of the bag. Or not so accidentally.

Anthony Perez

Cassie...you should watch "How Green was My Valley" and old movie but a great coal mining movie.

Steven Ashford

Well put. I don’t think the general public today realizes how much of our modern conveniences came from the space race.

Robin Fredriksson

One of my favorite movies, no one reacts to it, awesome!

Steven Ashford

Miss Riley’s aspect of this movie is tough. My 5th grade teacher died of cancer. I did have a handful of teachers that had a huge impact on my life. Still in touch with one of them some 40 years later!

Claudia☕

I love this movie so much!!

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Well, that was a really great reaction. Who would have guessed that collective, scientific endeavour could be so emotional? ;) Man, this movie had a profound impact on me when I was younger. So glad it won the poll :)

Brent Petty

I had a few "Miss Rileys" while I was in school. In the words of John Hickam "I was lucky to know'em."

JD Nevesytrof

The Space Race and Sputnik in particular was such a cause for concern because Americans had been confident that no weapon could really touch their homeland due to the distances involved. But as they saw Sputnik flying overhead, they realized the Russians had the capability to send anything they wanted unopposed over US territory, including atomic bombs. This made any confidence the US had in their defenses vanish and led to the new, more frightening policy of Mutually Assured Destruction.

Jon Johns

Well, now you're going to have to choose sides... Kristy's Tin Cup, or my Bull Durham? Kristy's Stargate, or Todzillas Robocop (or Star Trek?)

JD Nevesytrof

Are you watching From the Earth to the Moon for the channel? I know a lot of people love that series.

LightsCameraJake

All worthy... Hmm, Star Trek. Honestly never seen that much star trek, the first couple films and one or two of the newer ones that JJ Abrams Directed.

Isaac Reed

One of my favorite movies of all time.

djKENTO

Really glad Joe Johnston is getting some love. One of the most under rated directors and he’s gonna have two films on this channel soon. This and Jurassic Park 3… Now can we PLEASE get The Rocketeer.

Darren Hill

@brooke, A great pity indeed. The way it's being portrayed by some you'd think the movie was full of soft porn like 'Last Tango in Paris' or '9 and a Half Weeks'. There is less than 10 seconds of nudity in the entire 2hr film. The 2 simulated sex scenes are very brief. The only point I do agree on is it isn't something I'd choose on Mothers Day. But if she has put a line through it because she's been persuaded it's contains '"inappropriate content" that's very disappointing because that assertion is utterly false.

brooke atkins

Agree it’s sad that people persuaded her otherwise but oh well. Still tons of good movies to watch in the future.

Myles Away

Love this film. We watched it at school in 8th grade and it always stuck with me. Its very sentimental and melodramatic but I love it.

Michael Threapleton

Backdraft made me think of another good one for Cassie: Frequency (2000) with Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel. It's a firefighter thriller with a scifi time travel twist.

POSTALMNDCLARITY

This was amazing! Its been one of my favorite movies since I was a kid. Thank you so much for watching it! <3

Jason Dolan

I cannot wait for you to watch THE ROCKETEER which is also a Joe Johnston movie. I think you'd really see how his own love of rockets as a boy inspired him to direct this wonderful movie, that's in the vein of Indiana Jones.

Keith Jones

Homer Hickam's book "Rocket Boys" is the basis for this movie and a great read, the one deviation the writers made was the tension between Homer and his father, John Hickam was much more supportive than in the movie, but we needed some drama. This movie also is a great story of teambuilding and shows the four stages of teambuilding really well (Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing) It does this so well the Boy Scouts have used it in their adult leadership training class for years. I have loved this movie for years and often seem to make the mistake of cutting onions while watching it, a bit more than normal watching with you it seems. This was as good a reaction as I have seen you do in all the time I have been watching. Thanks Cassie

Stick Figure Studios

He started his career working on RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (and STAR WARS too), so he knows how to produce something in the "Indiana Jones vein" better than anybody.

Philip Alan

Interesting tidbit on my end. I've found a few miners tags in my metal detecting experiences throughout the years. I love mining history and I've been to so many old mining towns... living and ghost. Great emotional reaction, Cassie! :)

JD Nevesytrof

The Rocketeer, in tone and structure really feels like the first MCU movie. So much so they specifically chose the director for the first Captain America episode.

Sean Novack

Fun Fact: "October Sky" (the name of the film) is an anagram of "Rocket Boys" (the name of the book)

Darren Hill

@Gabor Arki.....The inconvenient truth is the USA and USSR both got their so called "technical superiority" from NAZI Germany. Without the direction of Wernher Von Braun, a former Major in the SS and developer of the V2 rocket, NASA would never have made it to the Moon by July 1969......

Ike

This was my first time watching October Sky. I can honestly say that I needed this reaction.

Michael Threapleton

Great movie and reaction. Chris Cooper (Homer's dad) yet again giving a masterful performance. He's such a brilliant actor. His academy award winning work in Adaptation (2002) is phenomenal.

Darren Hill

Not at all surprised with that quote. Werhner Von Braun was a NAZI. Thousands of slave labourers died in his factories in WW2. He should have hanged at Nuremberg with the other criminals.

Stick Figure Studios

Its remarkable similarity to ROCKETEER was/is the reason why the first CAPTAIN AMERICA is still my favorite MCU movie.

Stick Figure Studios

THE RIGHT STUFF is hands down the best film ever made about real-life space exploration. It's mythic. Like if John Ford had made a movie about astronauts.

Timothy Williams

My very first full length reaction and this was a lot of fun. Excellent job and an excellent movie!

Stick Figure Studios

Whenever I watch this film, I always forget until the opening studio logo that it's a Universal picture because I could swear it's Disney.

Michael Weiner

This is definitely a “must watch.” I hope Cassie is able to watch more of the old Hollywood classics.

Pickupthepieces76

Cool thing about this community is that besides watching my favourite movies through fresh eyes with Cassie are the movie picks of movies that I haven't seen and discovering gems like these myself. Really enjoyed this one.

Brent Petty

Yes, they eventually found other sources of income. For instance, when recovering one of their rockets, they found a huge grove of ginseng they sold.

Brent Petty

That is not his drunk stepdad giving them the alcohol. It's a moonshiner. And yes, they really did do that.

Robert da Spruce

Wow! I forgot how good this movie is. And your reaction made it that much more emotional. Wonderful reaction Cassie!

Mike LL

My grandfather came to this country as a very young boy from Wales as a member of a family of coal miners who settled in the coal mining country in Pennsylvania. But he graduated college and worked for IBM. My father was a college professor. So even though this movie speaks to my roots, I've never been near a coal mine and never even heard any stories about them. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Great movie and an even better reaction. Thank you, Cassie.

Mike LL

Well since von Braun was like a cameo character in not only this movie but in The Right Stuff also, I'm surprised that the other characters in those movies didn't shoot von Braun on sight since he was this evil Nazi factory floor whip cracker you say he was instead of the aerospace engineer that Wikipedia claims he was.
