A truly great movie. Back in an age when masculinity, femininity and storytelling were not compromised by the ridiculous politics we have today.

So some important facts. John Wayne, ...who although I have voted for him to be president in the past, was never a president but...that was adorable as usual Ms Cassy. He was also a lifelong friend and supporter of Maureen O'Hara and her husband. She talks a great deal about him in her autobiography, 'Tis Herself'. Great read about a CLASSY SMART AND WONDERFUL...LADY. After his death she even went so far as to speak to Congress on his behalf to commemorate a coin for him. As for the way women were treated in the movie, I guess the best way to answer would be to say it was a different time and a different country and this movie was just accurately depicting how things were. As a matter of fact 'THE RULE OF THUMB' actually comes from Ireland, as there was a law that said a man could beat his wife so long as he used a stick NO LARGER in diameter than his thumb! (...Sorry guys, can't make this stuff up and not here to debate it just enlightening y'all to the fact. 🤣😂🤷‍♂️.)

A few months back you reacted to Casablanca and now this, two of my favorite movies. I have seen both countless times but watching through your eyes left me feeling like I was seeing them for the first time. It also served to restore some of my faith that young people can still appreciate fine storytelling through the magic of movies. Thank you for your efforts and please, keep watching the oldies, for us oldies! I figured it was time to become a patron and support one of my favorite creators.

To really get how great John Wayne is you need to see McClintock or True Grit or the man who shot liberty valance or even Big Jake a great starting point would be Stagecoach and McClintock

I think in Western Europe women have owned property for centuries- at least since the Middle Ages or earlier. Eleanor of Aquitaine (1137) was one of the wealthiest women in Europe as she owned huge swathes of rich agricultural land in France and was considered a very eligible maiden for marriage - she married King Louis VII of France. Later she married Henry II of England and France and after her death her land was divided among her sons from Henry. Isabel de Clare (1172), daughter of Richard “Strongbow” de Clare, Anglo-Norman Earl of Pembroke, was another wealthy, land-owning (Ireland, Wales and England) heiress who married the famous William Marshall, or “The Marshall”, considered the greatest knight of the Middle Ages. He was impoverished as a young man, but his prowess in tournaments and good character earned him a place in Henry II’s court. There are many other women of the Middle Ages who owned land and wealth from Anglo-Norman culture. PS-the rule that estates could not go to the female line was called “entailment”, and had to be specified in the will. It was not the norm.

The ladies putting up their bonnets meant the man who got the bonnet returned it to her for a kiss.

Also, I grew up during a time when bar fights happened a lot. No one was fighting to hurt anyone…it was just to break the monotony. The last man standing would buy the next round for the house while we passed the hat around to get donations to fix the place up for the next weekend. It was just the small southern town thing to do.

The acting style is because most actors and directors were former stage people. It's what they knew. I remind myself of that when I'm watching the early films and TV of the 20th century. We are watching plays being filmed. Stage actors are told to project to the back of the theatre so it's reflected in their exaggerated method in said media.

I’m referring specifically to Western Europe and Ireland is part of it, being controlled and influenced by Anglo-Norman culture. That’s how the Widow Tillane owned land, which you questioned.

Where did I denigrate? Only arguing here is you. You couldn’t understand why I mentioned the examples of female land ownership - and I brought up your saying you didn’t know how Widow Tillane owned property. You’re the one shouting by using caps. It’s clear you can’t handle being gainsaid. Very immature (yes, now I’m denigrating you, deservedly.) And these days, women own property, practice medicine and law, hold political office, and teach. Sorry if my womansplaining hurt your tender feelings. 😆

Cassie there is a video on YouTube of Dolly Parton playing off the cuff with the locals at a pup. I think she sang coat of many colors.

I would point out that modern actors have their own idiosyncrasies which future generations will probably laugh at, as well. For example, time and again I laugh out loud when one character comforts another and, invariably, they press their foreheads together. I've never, in all my 52 years, done that or seen anyone else do that. Maybe it's something they do to each other in Hollyweird, but not in flyover country.

Another good John Wayne is The Big Trail and True Grit

Celeste McAllister

Maureen O'Hara a sister redhead and the queen of Irish American women was John Wayne's #1 leading lady, she could look him in the eyes and make him blink!

I like those also, but over time my favorite JW movies are The Searchers, Red River, QM, the Three God Fathers, and Stage Coach. The Searchers was a great study in bigotry and racism. Wayne was really good. Wayne did, in fact, marry a Hispanic and work in an industry known for widespread differing lifestyles, politics, and other differences. Many people confused his John Wayne persona with his private life. The one thing I think that can be said was that he was a complicated man.
