The Oklahoma land race was a real thing in the 19th century. The photo taken at the beginning of the race replicates the actual historical photo that exist and “the homestead act” was active in America till I think 1980(s) with Alaska being the last state where you could still get land for free. Great reaction guys :)

Ron Howard who played Opie in The Andy Griffith Show and Richie in Happy Days directed this movie. His brother Clint was the short man that was deducting wages from Nicole Kidman's character while she was plucking chickens. Clint often pops up in many of Ron Howard's movies, including Apollo 13

I was born and raised (and live) in Oklahoma and you'd be surprised at how accurate Howard's depiction of the race was. Pictures of the race was just like that. I believe America is the only place that had this kind of craziness and Oklahoma was the only place in America. It was Indian land.. Shannon's parents were called Sooners because the sneaked in before everyone else. The people in the race were called Boomers. Hence Boomer Sooner. Ron Howard's parents attended the University of Oklahoma in the theater department. Ron made this movie in part because he had ancestors in the race. His father was born in Newkirk, OK. His father was the guy who sold Tom Cruise the horse. The bad guy who Cassie thought was familiar is Thomas Gibson who starred in Criminal Minds for a long time. I graduated from OU in 1975, in theater and Ron Howard's parents had their picture in our backstage hallway. If you watch a lot of Ron's movie you'll see his brother and his father in a lot of them.

Another interesting bit of trivia? Tom Cruise and Thomas Gibson are the exact same age, to the day. July 3rd, 1962 for both of them. Think about the odds of that happening. That they'd both be born on that exact day, both become actors, both become BIG actors, both be chosen for that particular film. I'd imagine the odds are astronomical.
