Hey guys! We've made it to the final 2 episodes of The Pacific. This show definitely has a different vibe than BoB, and is very brutal and hard to watch at some points, but I still love it just as much. I feel like I've got to the know the characters so well, and I'm glad I was able to watch this. This show, as well as BoB have given me such an appreciation for the men/women who serve to protect our freedoms. So thank you for your service and thanks for watching a along with this series, hope you enjoy!

[Full Reaction] The Pacific - Part 9 "Okinawa" & Part 10 "Home"

Episode 9. Flame throwers are insane. No matter how many times I see them in war movies, I find them striking. Sledge still has his humanity. Will good for him to get the hell out of there. I wasn't sure what to think about Eugene at the beginning of the series, but I think he may be my favorite character in the series. My son and I went to Hiroshima. We went to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Episode 10. Emotional episode, that's for sure. That girl signing up peope for classes at Alabama Polytechnic reminds me of a young Michelle Williams. When she asked Sledge if the US military had taught him any skills, he replied "they taught me how to kill Japs."

The shock of finding that baby and family was super hard, Gene had literally just called a mortar strike on that house. Which is why Snafu says "Alot of mortars were shot up here" and Gene dismisses it immediately. He knew he caused it but he also knew nothing was going to change it. I think in that moment he's accepting that his humanity has all but gone, only to turn around and be faced with it once again by letting that lady die in his arms instead of alone. It was a very profound scene to me.

What a great series! I’d highly recommend Sledge and Leckie’s books “With the Old Breed” and “Helmet for my Pillow” on audible! They are read by the actors who portrayed Sledge and Leckie, so it gives it a nice familiar feeling after watching The Pacific! Thank you for watching this series and hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for Masters of the Air to release! Memphis Belle and 30 Seconds Over Tokyo are two good Air Force movies from WWII in the meantime if you are interested 😁

Cassie, I am not gonna lie, as someone who suffers from mild PTSD, this reaction made me bawl my eyes out. You knocked this one out of the park completely for the entire series. Band of Brothers was an excellent series but in ways kind of romanticized war in certain ways. The hardest episodes in that series all had to do with the Battle of the Bulge. The Pacific on the other hand significantly highlighted the horrors of war. The extreme amount of death and impact both physically and mentally is captured perfectly in this series. The reason I subscribe to your Patreon is because of how perfectly you capture and emotionalize certain moments of a series or film. I am highly impressed by the content you put out and look forward to being a subscriber for years to come. That being said, I want you to watch "Thank you for your Service". It deals with modern day PTSD with soldiers from Iraq. Highly recommended great film staring Miles Teller. Thank you for everything you do, Brandon Dague

So glad you loved the series! I never got around to watching it, so I thank you for giving me the opportunity to watch along with someone who is also curious about this series. Hope you can make time for Letters from Iwo Jima. I think its time for you to see what it was like on the other side with the Japanese.

Whenever I see Episode 10 of the Pacific, it always makes me want to watch The Best Years of Our Lives. It's a film from 1946 about three veterans returning home after World War II and it's fascinating to see a contemporary look at the subject.

That was really good. I just told my father that he needs to watch this, since his father has gone through these same conditions. He agreed that it is long over due.

I would like to recommed the German miniseries Generation War (Unsere Mütter, unsere väter). Here's what Amazon Prime says about it: "Valor, courage, and betrayal come to the fore in this remarkable epic that shows the everyday realities of wartime life from a deeply personal perspective. Billed as a German Band of Brothers, Generation War vividly depicts the lives of five young German friends forced to navigate the unconscionable moral compromises of life under Hitler"

I became a patron because of your BoB reactions. Your compassion and empathy are wonderful. This is the first reaction of yours that I didn't sync my copy to watch. I only cared about watching your reaction. These two episodes are a very hard watch. By this time the Japanese were only concerned with acceptable conditions for a surrender. The people of Okinawa paid a very dear price for this policy. A great reaction as expected. After this I think you owe it to yourself to watch something very lighthearted. May I suggest something along the lines of Princess Bride. Please stay safe.

Yes that is an excellent mini-series, I second this!

Nothing against Joseph Mazzello, who played Eugene Sledge, but I don't buy him being a war veteran. There is a physicality that service leaves on a man. Those who have it can often recognize it in others. There is muscle tension in the shoulders, face, and eyes just from garrison service that is different between the services (an airman holds himself/herself differently than a marine, for example).

It really isn’t as good as BoB, but what is? It’s still good.

Disagree, different tones to both series...the war in Europe is romanticized by many so anything regarding it will be idolized and held higher than the war in the pacific

Michael Hawk

Quite a few. Often actors who have played competitive sports can give a convincing performance. Robert Patrick, for example.

Jon Sedan, who plays John Basilone gave the best physical performance out of the primary cast, in my opinion. Lo and behold, he was an amateur boxer with 21 wins and one loss.

Maybe an idea as a little complementary review, the making of the pacific. it shows how far they went to get every detail of the mini-series right and what responsibility the actors felt to tell the story right. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tbKJG1tm88

I've now finished binge watching BoB and the pacific, with your reactions it made even more emotional. Thank you for the reaction, it made a bigger impact on me than when i watched it alone before. I don't know why but i felt like you watched it together with your audience, before i always watched it alone.

I'm new to the group, and just watched all your reactions today for The Pacific. I'm a historian and a history teacher so was very interested, as I love this series so much. I worked for a project called "Saints at War" when I was still in college and was able to meet and interview many veterans. I imagine by now most of your questions from the series have been answered in other comments, but one thing you said that I agree with you on that many don't is I slightly prefer this series over Band of Brothers. Don't get me wrong, they are BOTH just extraordinary shows. Both are amazing. Both are powerful and moving. But for me, what gives this one the edge is first, it shows more on the Homefront, and especially the final episode. Band of Brothers just ended while they were still in Europe, but Pacific shows them going back home, and shows the struggles they had in adjusting. That alone gives this the slight edge for me. I wish I could have my older students watch this but it's a bit much for high schoolers.
