Wonder how ANCHORING our 46ft Sailboat in remote places feels like? Here is a day in our REAL LIFE Sailing Adventure.

Join us this week as we sail from Malta to a remote anchorage on the island of Gozo.

Just after we left Valletta, we hear the coastguard call our boat name on the VHF radio but since we have not violated any maritime laws (and this time we even provision for our trip off the beaten path), we were free to continue our sail north.

As we pass the spectacular cliffs of Gozo, on our sail along the coast, we are gifted with a rare downwind sail. But before the sun sets, we still have to manoeuvre our sailing yacht through a tiny gab between the huge cliffs to make it into the remote anchorage where we will spend the night.

Hardly any boats, tour boats and charter boats come for excursions to this remote place In order not to collide with a nearby yacht, we use an anchoring technique called med mooring. This means we will have to drop our anchor close to the rocks, put our yacht into reverse and cast lines off the stern of the boat. It is a very difficult steer a sailboat and attempt med mooring, when sailing single handed but even as short handed crew it is not easy to tackle a sailing technique like this.

Especially in high winds anchoring in this fashion can be difficult. Luckily our small anchorage is a calm protected bay and we are able to attach the cleats to the shoreline. While our new sailing crew watches, Sarah handles the lines and Enrique uses the dinghy to secure them to the rocks. Then the anchor chain needs to be tightened with the help of the windlass. With the snubber secured, our sailing excursion for the day is over, and we are ready for dinner on the boat. Sarah often wants to sleep at anchor on the deck of the boat. This time especially because in this area we have some extraordinary company.

At night we have this sailing destination all to ourselves, and only the strange cry of the Sheerwater can be heard. To safe energy aboard and not disturb our feathered neighbours, we turn off the lights as consumption is a huge factor when living off-grid. So goodnight everyone from our tiny home at sea!

Join us next week on our daily life aboard a sailboat as we can continue this sailing expedition & full time travel around the world.
