Thanks for this! Excited to go on this journey again with you both. You bring up great points and criticism. Without spoiling what's to come, I'll just stay you're on Simon's villain arc right now. It'll all come full circle eventually. This documentary will show why every girl, even those that didn't make it, helped make XG what it is today. This documentary is very raw in terms of the process. The age thing is definitely a tough pill to swallow. The sacrifice these girls go through, the families, it's truly brutal. The closest comparison to idol culture we have in western world would be how young Olympic athletes have had to commit to achieve their dreams. Also for additional context the opening scene was Simon announcing the final cuts, and he was in fact emotional during that scene. While the documentary is great, it does suffer from some rough editing and time skips back and forth, so it's a bit difficult to keep track of.

I agree with all what y'all I was just as shocked, also the bath room situation when i watched that i was like "Simon, this makes no sense i understand what you are saying but that doesn't mean I agree, that's something normal for a 11 -15 yrs old to do". But as im rewatching this episode with you, the Sunghan from RIIZE situation just came to my mind like a flash, with scandal where haters saw a video on his old social media from high school with his girlfriend, like the most normal high school dating fling-thingy that at least every (2/3) human being on planet earth had, but netizens took that made him into some despicable human being, just because he dated before debuting, imaging that making someone stop their carrier because its now a crime to have a crush in HS ???, Also lets not talk about all the other idols that went under the bus for less things that happened way before the debuted that comes as a Grim-Reaper to hunt them down. k-pop and music in general as nice as it looks and sounds its a scary place to be, if you dont have a mental support all through. As for k-pop this a much more sensitive matter, it takes something in you to make it through. Also the idol Industry, needs to imply and revise their age limitations, cause 11-15 is not it, at all, like no no and no, like 18-20 AT LEAST !!!, cuz at 11, what do you even know, other than cartoons and eating, playing and refusing to sleeping or actually sleeping ?!

Nate

This amount of pressure at 11 is not unusual in asian culture though. If it's not idol academy, it's studies, extracurricular activities, violin, piano, everything. Schools constantly post grading based on relative of your peers (ranking in school) rather than your individual success. Not saying it is right, but culturally this is how it is.

I've lived in California my whole life and our dance scene is massive over here. A lot of the choreographers that go on to choreograph for top kpop groups got their start competing and dancing in the California dance community. I grew up dancing on junior teams and moved onto adult teams and i gotta tell you its like that over here as well. In junior teams we are taught just like the adults and some of the music choices are definitely NOT age appropriate. I understand your concern and appreciate you guys bringing it up because there have been cases of inappropriate conduct with students and teachers even in our own dance community in LA. That doesnt mean that it ALWAYS happens because truthfully it was a rarity. We went through ruthless training to get on competition level and i can honestly say if my directors were not as strict as they were i wouldnt have gotten to the level that i needed to be. Keep in mind we are watching 45-1hr episodes over 3 years or so of training. They show alot of the tough part of "tough love" and based on how the girls talk about Simon I tend to imagine he was tough but fair with them.

Yes, these first 3 episodes are really hard to digest and see how much they had to mature in such a short time. In other hand, I found so beautiful how all the girls thought about the group/all the members from the start to the end, this type of selfishness and excessive competition didn't exist (just one time it had kinda of this, but Simon promptly corrected them). We are going to have quite a journey with this documentary, prepare your popcorn and tissues, there will be great happy and sad moments to come.

And we need to have a counter of how many times you say "ELEVEN YEARS OLD" hahaha S2

Totally agree with everything you said, it's such a hard watch as growing adults, they are literally babies. It took me so long to finish this series because I can't handle it but after that until the end of last EP (EP∞) I really appreciated what they had been through and their sacrifice, their mindset became so mature and strong I'm so surprised. I'm not a big fan of Simon's method but I will continue to support XG forever :) and I know it's such a hard pill to swallow but we will be with you guys along the way.

Yeah, i also had to raise my brow when I first saw the choreo. For some, dancing can just pure art form, and originally moves don't really have meaning on its own, but not everyone who'll be watching this thinks like that, so I do hope from now on they can do the training with more age-appropriate (that word itself can be a little weird considering those who give meaning to choreo are those who watch them but they also have to do smth with some of the song choices 'cause some of them just adds to the discomfort). The first three or four episodes might seem really harsh. It does get a little better at the latter half, although those just give us viewers a different kind of pain. 😅🥹 I think it was a few years ago when I started to realize that I feel a little ambivalent when people use "talented" or "genius" to describe someone with no other explanation, 'cause it somehow implies like it's smth innate, when most of the time, 90% of it is pure hard work over a very long period of time. (Ofc there are those who was born with a certain kind of talent or genius but those are more part of the outliers, i think) I think I started to feel that even more strongly after watching this documentary.

The best discussion I've seen about this. Just remember Simon was an idol and has first hand experience with the negative and positive. He also doesn't sugarcoat anything. This doc is what made me fall in love with XG and Simon. Awesome reaction!🫡🐺🧬👽

Hi girls!, thanks for bringing this to our attention @35:39 I agree with what Esosa says, context IS important, we don't see all the comments the girls got from all their teachers, mostly it's going to be SIMON's comments, BUT in a video on the ALPHAZ APP the girls (COCONA, MAYA, JURIA) were playing a game like charades (? ) (keep in mind they already debuted in this video is "MASCARA" era but the three of them were 16&17) and they were trying to explain "fox" and one of Maya's clues was and I quote "when we were trainees our teacher used to tell us to do it like this many times" and JURIA replied "Sexy?" and Maya said "Yes, but like this animal" .... so by this comment IMO as innocent as it was, we can confirm that the girls got that kind of comments about acting "Sexy" during the training years, they don't show it in the documentary at all, but at the end of the day it's edited by the company who wants to portray the project in a certain way, it's going to be a rough ride ladies because it's RAW when the girls tell their story, but I wonder how much information we don't know about what's happening behind the cameras and what comments or actions are being "normalized" to these young girls just because they want to be artists... now i just HOPE the company learns from this whole experience and doesn't do the same to the next generation of girl or boy artists, but one thing i know, it's ALWAYS going to be XG first for me, no matter how much i like the creative direction and sound of the company, my girls come first and i will always have a raised eyebrow at the company that put them together to make money, no matter how "sensible" they portray to be... (love your reactions and I hope you have a lovely & successful 2024 🎉🎇🎊🥳)
