FIRST! Welcome to the beginning of a long journey! Excited for this! A good portion of the difficulties XG faces in Korea stems from podcast interview Max Matsuura gave, whom at the time was former CEO of Avex (XGALX is a subsidiary of Avex Entertainment). He had some statements that were polarizing and shared sentiments that he was using the K-pop system and Koreans to promote XG. There has been a large debate since then on the nuance behind his statements. Whether he was seriously claiming to be using K-pop or speaking in envy of how great K-pop is. What gets forgotten is the influence Matsuura and Avex has had in bringing K-pop to Japan. Regardless of his intent the damage was done. This occurred in the middle of Mascara era and blindsided XGALX, XG, and Simon which definitely set back the good will they built up at that point. Since then it's been an uphill battle for them for something they didn't even create. There are instances where XGALX should have made statements to clear up confusion, and were slow to it. But ultimately XGALX has done nothing intentional to try and create a divide amongst Koreans and XG. Despite all this, let's remember that XG has been invited to KCON now twice this past year, is about to start their second Korean reality show in January (can't wait for ya'll to watch the first), and have slowly continued to regain some of that good will in Korea. They're too good to ignore, and they put the world on notice in 2023.

I just think Simon is a very courageous man to intentionally create an entirely Japanese group, born out of the kpop idol system (and one that promotes heavily in Korea), knowing first-hand how Koreans view Japan and how quick k-netizens are to blow up on Japanese kpop idols at the smallest thing, much less an entire group. I think he’s uniquely positioned, as someone who is equal parts Korean and Japanese, for the challenge tho. His heart also seems to be in the right place, as it seems this project is a way that he can bridge his own 2 identities (along with his passion for music). I hope in years to come we can see Koreans and Korean ppl who consume kpop embrace XG for their talent and music (although, I think since this prequel episode, they’ve leaned more towards labeling their sound as “global pop” and away from identifying as kpop).
