I used a few references for this piece so I thought I'd share my thought process on how and why I use references. Feel free to ask any questions!

Is there anything that influences the pose you choose for each character?

It’s a few factors. What I want the viewers to focus on, personality, and what I feel like drawing. Here I want my viewers to look at the face so I didn’t want a pose that would distract too much from it. This character’s personality is more of the typical cool side character type thats quiet and focused, think Sasuke, Vergil, Aki, that type. And I wanted to really focus on the shirt so I wanted a pose that didn’t intrude on the torso area. While this is a more simple pose, there’s reasons for it and it accomplishes what I wanted. Sometimes you don’t need a complicated pose with crazy perspective for a piece to work. You more so just have to think “what do I want to accomplish with this piece?” And depending on what that is, you can choose a pose that fits that. A regular standing pose works nice for character concept art where you need to see all the details, but not so much for a piece where you want to express the characters personality.

is it fair to all these other artists you’re referencing that your art is just insanely superior ? it makes no sense
