the color purple was also a tony award winning broadway musical. the new movie version is based on that

Sometimes when it comes to movies, especially this one, you feel it more than rather think of it. The Color Purple is one of the amazing movies that hits you hard and you don’t have to think about what it’s about. If it makes you feel that raw emotion that renders you speechless, then the movie did its job.

When I first saw this I was also confused about why Celie seemed so eager to be nice to Shug - if you think about it Celie is an adult now and has been with this man for decades and every time they have sex she sees this woman's poster on the wall. She's very curious about the woman her abusive husband loves so much plus she's so lonely and isolated without Sophia around.

Celie was prolly surprised by that rain. Cuz this is set throughout before & throughout The Great Depression/Dustbowl Era.. in GA.. which was impacted by periodic droughts & the Dustbowl (drought era)..
