Oh boy it's time to sweat an Akli drawing again.

I've been trying a different shading technique lately, which is to say I've been shading it more or less the same but with a new brush. This has the effect of making my shading slightly rougher, but in a way I like a lot more. I feel like my rendering has been approaching some sort of "realism", but I would much prefer to have a more stylised shading style. I'll see where I end up I suppose.

I like the general idea here for the shading, but... The overall effect seems rushed. The left thigh on the front has GORGEOUS shading, with really nice blending. But the strokes of the shading elsewhere are pretty stark and clear, as if there was no blending done at all. The direction is great. But I think you're not at the destination yet. I'd love to see more love added to the blending here, myself.

I understand what you mean, but that's actually the point to be honest. I've always wanted my work as a whole to look more impressionistic, and this is a rough step in that direction. My usual technique is to airbrush the light on to the character, and then detail with a soft round brush, and I suppose that looked nice, but it felt sterile? The difference in smoothness you see is definitely the parts where my old way of shading is still evident, but I was trying not to rely on it. Also I guarantee this wasn't rushed, it took quite a bit longer to shade this than normal.

Focused out, I can see the realistic effect you're shooting for. Focused in at full size, and the need for refinement is visible. I like where this new approach is going though. Akli is as cute and teasing as ever.
