A rip in space time, with a bright light and thunderous crackle of electricity, causes reality to jump and change.  Nobody knows what causes it, and it seems to happen at random times in random locations.  All people really know for certain is that if you get too close to it, you'll find your own physical shape merged into something (or someone!) that is close to you.
