One of the things that I love about Firefly is that it's a mix of seemingly opposites. It's in space, in the future, but it's also very civil war, cowboy and pioneer-like. (At least in the outer fringes of space.) It's a fusion of Western and Asian. And, as you noticed, they have their own lingo that's developed. Often saying 'shiny' for similar to cool... or 'gorram' for similar to goddamn. They routinely mix in Mandarin as well. I think you'll enjoy it overall... the practicalities you don't often see...and the humor. It's got a cult following. And while it's a short lived series + movie... it's a nice counterpart to your other Whedon watchings.
