Ancestral Magic in this show can be confusing since there’s so much information to digest, but I’ll try to explain. Ancestral Magic is a form of magic that requires the witches in NO to channel their consecrated ancestors for power. This does not mean that they don’t have power without the Ancestors. Remember, Davina was shunned and was still able to practice magic — she’s still a witch. If you don’t have access to ancestral magic, you have to seek other forms of magic; for example, traditional magic. Traditional Magic is the oldest and purest form of magic. It’s the kind of magic that Freya and Bonnie practices. While the most popular form of witchcraft known to witches, it is the most exhausting because when a witch uses this power, they must exert their own energy, causing them to experience symptoms of dizziness, fatigue, and (mostly) nosebleeds. We don’t ever see Davina experiencing stuff like this. Traditional Magic is also highly dependent on the level of knowledge a witch has over the elements of the Earth and the forces of nature. Ancestral Magic is also similar to Spirit Magic which Bonnie used to channel 100 dead witches in TVD to try and defeat Klaus. While Ancestral Magic draws power from only NO witches, Spirit Magic draws power from all the witches on The Other Side (which no longer exists so this magic can’t be practiced). And while it was suggested in season one you can only practice ancestral magic within NO boundaries, Vicent is the Regent of all nine covers with a direct link to the Ancestors.

And I'm not the biggest fan of Lucien, but I understand his anger about the compulsion. Elijah not only used him, Aurora, and Tristan as bait for their father (which they nearly didn’t survive), but Aurora said it was like “someone had peeled off our skin.” They weren’t just compelled to be the Mikaelson’s, they lost their identities too.

I like this post people also forget that New Orleans witches don’t go the other side like every other supernatural being the ancestral plane. In the first season Monique, Davina and the blonde witch didn’t know about the other side plus Monique didn’t send Hayley and unborn Hope to ancestral plane she sent her to the other her side cuz Mikael wouldn’t be with the witch ancestors. Esther only gained access to the ancestors cuz when they buried her in new Orleans she went to the ancestral plane not the other side
