It's so interesting & compelling to see perspectives from new watchers who weren't originally at ground zero for this show. And, oh... did this episode start a firestorm. Lexa (and Clexa) was hugely popular. But by the time S2 with Lexa started airing... Alycia Debnam-Carey had already been scooped up for the main cast of Fear the Walking Dead. So her availability for The 100 S3 was really limited. Most fans expected her to be killed off. But having it happen by a stray bullet right after the love scene? Hoo... backlash is an understatement. Even big media writers criticized the way it was handled. (Don't get me wrong... it's a beautifully acted, emotional scene.) But because unfortunately it underscored a problematic trope called Bury your Gays. Which was happening in shows way more than most people realized. Lexa was the straw that broke the camel's back. The creator of the 100 ended up putting out a letter of apology. (Again, for the circumstances of Lexa's death, not that she died. And also for repeatedly telling fans that they were NOT going to kill her.) The upside? A lot of discussion of the issue amongst writers and media led to more awareness of the harm of that trope. More thought being put towards not perpetuating it. And Lexa remains an incredibly iconic character.
