The battle with the mages happened AFTER Centra fell to Nilfgaard. We were finally in present day with all our characters in this episode.

The battle of Sodden with the mages happens after Nilfgaard already took over Cintra. So the mages are pretty much trying to prevent Nilfgaard from going even further North. And the black dust that Fringilla threw at Tissaia was dimeritium. Dimeritium pretty much prevents mages from being able to use magic and, in this case, it weakens them to an extent.
