As far as his emotions go I think it's important to remember Dexter is a sociopath not a psychopath. Dexter at one point was in fact normal. His psyche was fractured by what happened to him but he never completely lacked empathy or remorse. What Janet said is accurate Dexter is an unreliable narrator because he is speaking from his perspective which is clearly skewed by what he has been TOLD to believe about himself and he is in fact emotionally retarded which doesn't help.
