Ares is the greek version of the god of war, in ancient rome they had the latin names for basically the same gods and the latin name like Klaus said is Mars (many of the latin names are the names of the planets, for example Zeus is Jupiter, Poseidon is Neptun, Aphrodite is Venus...). As a potterhead my favourite is the latin name for Athene which is Minerva. (sorry for being that kind of smart ass, I had latin in school and the mythology around the gods was my best friends and mine favourite part of it)

The new orleans witches are an exception.... The reason they cant perform magic outside New orleans isn't really explained properly, but its referenced several times that they perform ancestral magic, I.e, they draw thier magic from the dead ancestors, so therefore they are powerless outside new orleans, but its still kinda confusing to me lol

Yeah the New Orleans Witches are different. With the ancestral magic they are bound to New Orleans if they wanna do magic. It is totally different from what we have seen so far.

In the TVD universe there's only one way to do magic, and that's drawing from the power or life spirits of people dead or alive. Those who practice ancestral magic draw power from their ancestors spirits. They can also draw power from a living creature's life essence and through sacrificing the the living, which is dark magic. In my opinion, if they didn't have these rules and conditions it would feel as if the witches aren't witches but are superheroes with superpowers. If they just had the power within themselves it would become like a marvel mutants movie/show.
