Imagine for a moment Wizards of the Coast said the following: We are excited to introduce a new deck product to support the Pauper format. This is meant to be in line with the Event Decks we have released for specific sets, except this is not set-specific and is for Pauper, rather than for Standard. Get started with the deep-strategy and classic gameplay Pauper format in style! Draw on common, but high-powered Magic cards from throughout Magic's history with this tightly constructed 60-card deck. Also includes a 15-card sideboard, strategy guide, Spindown life counter, and a deck box. MSRP: $24.99 Languages: English, Japanese, French, German, and Chinese (Simplified) So my question is: How well do you think this product would sell? And how much do you think this product would benefit not only the Pauper format, but the larger ecosystem of Magic: The Gathering. Fully upgraded, top tier Pauper decks, ready to play right out of the box for $24.99. I believe the answer to both those questions is, a lot, and I propose this is a product Wizards of the Coast should consider offering. Let’s take a look at the how and why. The first thing I want to say about Wizards of the Coast offering these proposed Pauper Event Decks is that there’s a lot of Commander, and once Wizards embraced Commander, it became a cash cow for them and a major foundation of the game as well. Building more blocks like this only benefits the game, both in terms of player engagement, enjoyment, retention and satisfaction, and also, yeah, company profits. Originally called Elder Dragon Highlander, or EDH, Commander was a player created format that became a favorite for causal gameplay at GPs. It grew fast and strong over the years, but Wizards of the Coast was very reluctant to get behind it. It wasn’t until the company took a chance on offering preconstructed Commander decks that the format truly exploded. The product sold like wildfire and interest in Commander gained a remarkable momentum. Wizards went from reluctantly offering these small print run Commander precon decks to making the yearly Commander products a spotlight feature. Would the same hold true for Pauper pre constructed decks as well? Solid idea!

This is a great idea, Prof.

This is going to happen. I hope you get credit.

I'm afraid WotC is losing interest in the paper product... I HOPE I'm wrong, and I'll definitely be around until I'm proven right (or I die... whichever comes first).

Pauper has become one of my favorite formats in the last year. I would feel much better buying a new player a pauper pre-construct than just a random intro deck or packs to crack.

I like the idea, I feel like a higher price tag may draw some newer players away. I know when I look at precon decks around 30 bucks I’d rather build my own. I feel like 15-20 would be a good starting point.

I love this idea. I've become interested in Pauper recently as well (largely because of your videos) and have started assembling some paper decks. I need to order a variety of commons to finish off several decks, but I haven't had the time to go through TCG player and fill out a cart of everything I'd need. If these precons were available, I would snap-buy 4-5 of them just to have a pauper library ready to go.

I'll add that even if WOTC didn't officially support a product like this, it might be possible for a vendor such as Card Kingdom or Channel Fireball to simply package up and sell their own versions of pre-made pauper decks, much like the CK Battle Decks. It's a logical evolution of that idea. Since CK is your sponsor, maybe pitch it to them and see if they'd sell some TCC-approved Pauper precons on your page there? I'd buy some.

I would very likely give this a shot.

Hell yes, I would! I paid about $60 from CK for Dev's Pauper Elves deck, and I'm looking forward very much to playing it at our Pauper event this Wednesday (Geeky Teas & Games, Burbank, CA). $24.99 is a steal for a great deck.
