“May I ask you a question, Adora?” She waited for a consenting nod, then continued. “Why do you think it’s your responsibility to protect your friend?”

The question struck Adora as ludicrous. Why wouldn’t it be her responsibility to protect Catra? It’s what they did for each other — it always had been. But when Adora opened her mouth, she found herself struggling to express just how instinctual that urge was.

“Because we look out for each other,” she said at last. “Nothing bad was supposed to happen as long as we had each other.”
