Two things I want to clarify 1.Every time Subaru restarts the “witch’s scent” gets stronger, which is why Garfiel picked it up when he came out of the tomb 2. Subaru didn’t see Otto as a friend because of what happened in the other life and the fact that he is a merchant that they hired. That’s why he is shocked when he tells them and gets tears of joy

Yeah you can see Garf's opinion of him lower after each death. Before he died the first time Garf offered the idea to him for Subaru to do the trial, after that death because he had a faint witch's scent Garf denied the same idea that he previously suggested and after this episode's death the scent got even stronger so he was full on hostile when Subaru brought up the idea

^ Yes this and he doesnt rlly think anybody is his friend or even that they like him unless they come out and say so themselves. Subaru thinks he is alone and has to do everything alone, he doesn’t realize he has friends he can rely on for when he needs help doing things. He is currently being taught even more lessons and learning that he doesn’t need to do things alone.

The way I seen the friend revelation is that we seen in the flashback trial that Subaru lost all his friends, and hates himself, which was why he never went to school. I think he couldn't even fathom someone thinking of him as a friend. (Especially with Beatrice recently telling him that she doesnt care about him) It probably also factors into the fact that he resets so much that he spends more time with people than they spend with him - so they dont feel as deep a connection to him as he does them. When we first met Otto and he pushed Subaru off the wagon in a panic, they had only met earlier that day, so were still strangers in a horrifying situation. In his current life, he's hung out with Otto enough now outside of dying that Otto is able to know him well enough to decide he's a friend - which probably gets confusing for Subaru tracking what is the "proper timeline" vs his failed lives.
