In the novels Subaru gets tortured by Rem for much much much longer, she heals him just to keep him alive so she can torture him more. Ram mercy kills him at the end of that life.

If it helps here have been his tries, with no spoilers. (hopefully it helps you guys understand what has happened so far 😄); 1st: became a butler, bonded with the maids because he worked with them. Interacted with betty. Had some bonding time with Emilia. Went to the village with Rem. Made a promise with emilia. Died in his sleep because of a curse. 2nd: Became a butler. Bonded with the maids because he worked with them. Interacted with Betty. Had some time with Emilia. Went to the village with Rem. Made a promise with Emilia. Decided to stay awake and thats when he finds out he’s been poisoned/cursed. He tries to find help but encounters Rem while she is patrolling the mansion to make sure nothing suspicious was going on (they were suspicious of Subaru so he was under surveillance to make sure he wasnt evil since he stinks of the Jealous Witch Scent). Rem kills him because it’s suspicious he was walking around at night. 3rd: Decided to not become a butler this time so he can gather information. He doesnt create a bond with the maids because he isn’t a butler, so they have to treat him with respect since he is a guest (which is why they dont talk with him. He is a guest who stinks of the jealous witch). Rem and Subaru DO NOT go to the village (Rem decides to not go to keep an eye on Subaru). Subaru decides to go to a hill to watch the events at the mansion unfold so he knows what exactly happens. Rem finds him and kills him because he was suspiciously staring down at the mansion (and remember he always has had and always will have the Jealous witch smell all over him). 4th: Traumatized after his third death and thinking Rem is behind everything. He does nothing but stay at his room. He makes a contract with Betty for her to protect him. Rem DOES go to the village (since they suspect Subaru a little less since he has been in bed all day so she goes to the village like normal). He has a nightmare and someone enters his room to hold his hands (as we saw it was rem and ram holding one of his hands each) so he calms down and can go back to sleep peacefully. Betty takes him to her library to keep him safe. She is summoned to Rem’s room. Subaru is taken by Emilia to see that Rem is dead. He now knows it wasnt her who poisoned/cursed him the first time. Rem died from the same thing he died of the very first time. They ask him if he knows anything and he just very suspiciously apologizes and leaves (his suspicious meter skyrockets right here because he didn’t just fuckin answer them and the scent of the jealous witch is on him making him 100x more suspicious). He runs away and decides he wants to save EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM (this is the beginning of his torturous journey because he promises himself this). He jumps off and dies. Hope this helps 😁

The term originates from a video game called Zone of the Enders, but it later became a meme.
