At first he hated her for being an enemy in the war. She was from that other country and she had nearly wiped out his whole squadron/team so he captured her as a prisoner of war. He probably called her a tool because she couldnt speak or read at all and all she would do is accept orders to kill/fight. He didn’t want her because he hated her for killing nearly his whole team so he gave her to his brother but he didnt expect him to care so much about an enemy. People are blinded with anger when bad shit happens. He didn’t care that she was a child, he just knew that she could kill. Now it’s happening again, Gilbert died and he thinks its her fault because she was supposed to be like his body guard. Obviously that’s not right, she isnt to blame for his death but that is what he thought. He knew how his brother treated her and he himself was probably softening up until his brother’s death. You can clearly see he had softened up because if he still hated her for being an enemy and for letting his brother die, he would have told her to go take out the enemy but he didnt, he just walked away.

I feel like in a way he hates her and tells her to kill herself but he doesnt really want that. She is the only thing left that gilbert left behind. He is angry at her for his death but he got even more upset right there on top of the train because she was willing to just accept her death instead of fighting back which made him furious. Basically “You let my brother die and now you arent willing to fight/kill to defend your own life??? Just kill yourself and die already then”
