Most likely the needle was put in him before the series started. Killua also heard Illumi's voice when Gon and him were being watched by Nobunaga after being captured.

i think it was put in when illumi revealed himself in the hunter exam and put his hand forward and scared him. im assuming thats why he killed an examinee too

I used to believe this, but Netero wouldn't allow Nen abilities to force Killua to DQ himself. He said as much at the appeal after the exam. The needle had to be pre exam

Ya'll guessing but talking like you're certain. Scene wasn't dramatic in the manga. Feel it was before because Killua had already been going on missions for years prior to the H.E. and Killua didn't recognize the needles. You'd think he'd seen similar disguises before and obviously needles but acted very surprised.

God, every time anything happens it's, "this doesnt make sense" "how does this make any sense" "How could he know about that". So nitpicky. Like there are legit criticisms of the show, but literally every detail you guys have to scrutinize. Gets so old. Idk how I made it this far.
