Just to explain some of the reason why the old lady acted the way she did. As I have interpreted it. This won't include any future spoilers just stuff we have already seen. From her perspective, it was the kindest thing she could think of to do. The mother of the brothel has witnessed the story of a courtesan falling for a conmans words so many times. As she herself was a courtesan before managing the brothel as well. We even saw Mao Mao witness that story. A conmans promising a courtesan the world, only to be left abandoned and used. She knows how smart Fengxian is, so when all the events with Lakan happen, it's that story playing out to her all over again, and she really truly believed that Fengxian was smarter than that. As Mao mao said. Any other Courtesan would have been kicked to the curb. But despite Fengxians pregnancy, despite Fengxians reputation falling, and despite the brothel itself falling into hard times for a while. She never let that absolute worst fate happen to Fengxian and by extension, Mao Mao. She exploded in anger at Lakan because to her, he was probably nothing more than another conman who used and abandoned Fengxian a moment later, why give him anything as to how Fengxian is these days

idk for sure but I think fengxian timed things out to ensure she got pregnant that night such that she could be bought out for cheap by Lakan a few months later. And I think there’s some layers to Fengxian’s comment that she / courtesans don’t have mothers because right after she has sex with Lakan (when she conceived maomao) she’s singing a lullaby to herself.
