Loved the reaction! Made in Abyss is peak, and just keeps going. So they did mention, the helmet doesn't actually have anything to do with the consciousness swapping (it's actually one of his personal artifacts called "Gangway", which he used in the fight with "slippery" Reg), it was just meant to drive home the identity of "Bondrewd, the Sovereign of Dawn", to the world and "Papa" to Prushka. That large flower-looking contraption was the Zoaholic. Can't stop the #1 Daddy Bondrewd!

This movie hits me no matter how many times I watch it. I can never get over how cute the animation is with how brutal and morbid the show can get.

Did Reg go back and put all the kids out of their misery?

I don't think so, but they will likely soon die - I'm sure Bondrewd probably fed them to keep them alive for research. I think only Mitty was immortal as she received Nanachi's curse so she had two doses of it. Remember Nanachi said most hollows are just killed by other cave raiders when encountered and people are told they died. Even if left alone they would likely die of thirst or hunger - or be drowned if any of that water spills down the hole since Reg destroyed the station above it.

Now that you've seen the movie, lets see how you all will survive season 2. Can't wait

I don't think the author is hinting that Prushka was abused in that way, aside from being cut up and turned into a cartridge. He seems to have this weird thing for the innocence and obliviousness of children concerning anything sexual. Like when Reg popped a boner bathing with Riko and she pointed it out, or the being strung up naked. It seems like a bit of a fixation but also it shows that Riko really is totally oblivious to any of it. All over the world but especially in Japan it's common for parents to bathe with their children, and for children to bathe with their siblings I think well above an age where people would stop doing that in the west.

Apparently there was an interview with the author and someone had asked about the whole papa pole thing and essentially Bondrewd taught Prushka to do surgery and how to dissect animals. She saw a penis on one of the things she was dissecting and when she asked Bondrewd what it was he replied with “It’s the pole that makes you a papa” so she refers to penises as papa poles. It was not meant to imply that bondrewd sexually abused prushka, its more of like a translation issue/not enough clarification so to speak. I also thought the same thing when i initially watched MiA and had a similar reaction to all of you.

What makes Bondrewd so horrifying is that he is disconnected from all morality (he sees no evil in his actions), having spent too much time in the abyss and obsessed by its mysteries. It still breaks my heart for Prushka :'(. A character I particularly like. In a way, she's going on an adventure with us. It's time to go down to the 6th Layer (again, it isn't the last one). Get ready for season 2, this is the most fucked-up part! 2 things about this "Papa pole": 1) Prushka is not talking about Bondrewd's willy. The translation is a bit clumsy. She's talking about the male genitalia in general. "the stick that helps you to become a papa" is what she means, what she learned during an animal dissection course with Bondrewd (in the Made In Abyss Anthology book). Bondrewd is deranged, but not that kind. 2) /!\ A point never to be forgotten: A work of art is imbued with the culture from which it springs. Anime is a Japanese work filled with elements typical of Japanese culture. So even if Prushka had talked about Bondrewd's willy, it wouldn't have the same meaning to japanese as it would have to us => In Japan, it's common for children and parents to bathe together (up to a certain age, some into their teens). There's nothing abnormal about having seen your parents naked. And there's nothing sexual about it, of course. Although the Japanese are very prudish, nudity is absolutely not a taboo in their "bathing culture", be it at home or in public baths. In fact, all clothing is strictly forbidden in public baths, and only the small towels provided by the establishment are allowed. In these baths, everyone is naked. Women on one side, men on the other (children under 6 with the women). There are still some mixed baths. This bathing culture is also very present in anime. Through years of watching anime, Western audiences have come to assimilate and better understand certain cultural aspects (uniforms at school, never shoes in interiors, honorific suffixes, temples and prayers, hierarchical respect and seniority, table manners etc.). But many things keep to be misunderstood or misinterpreted in anime because of cultural differences. Or because of localization, which can cause information to be lost. For example, to the Western audience, it seems surprising that Reg asked Marulk if he's a girl, because the character is dressed as a girl but uses "boku", an essentially masculine Japanese pronoun for self-talk. Hence Reg's question.

SolidFiction

Some people view Bondrewd as a guy with messed up morals and standards, but in the end, he just wanted to learn as much about the abyss as he could. And the only way to learn the secrets of a monstrous place is to become a monster yourself. One would have to sacrifice their humanity to fully understand the mysteries of the abyss, and bondrewd was willing to go that far for that sake

Bondrewd is such a perfect villain — he is calm all the way, he constantly praises the children who outsmarted him, he inflicts pain more agonizing than death, yet harbors no cruel intentions, his love, though genuine, lacks any human resemblance. Remarkably, he remembers each tortured child’s name and dreams, even correcting Reg to not see them as things, and last but not least: during all conversations he has never told a lie. Also I'm no way excusing Bondrewd, he's certainly a villain, but it seems it's worth thinking about the parallels between him and Rico. Movie points that Riko worryingly similar to Bondrewd specifically. The fact that Riko's first actions when meeting Reg were: 1. Charcoal Experiment: Tried feeding him charcoal to wake him up, akin to stoking a furnace. 2. Electric Shock: Bound him to an electric chair and shocked him for a charge. 3. Skin Durability Test: While unconscious, tested his skin’s durability by attempting to cut it with a blade. 4. Fireproof Hair: Burned his hair to verify its fireproof nature. 5. Metallic Body Strength: Assessed the hardness of his metallic body parts by using a saw. 6. Unsuccessful Internal Probe: Attempted to probe his insides with a stick, but couldn’t succeed. It seems she is truly White Whistle material. It isn’t coincidence, that Bondrewd said “You may be much more like us than I first imagined”. It isn’t surprising that he was glad that they won over him and continued journey, probably, because he see his passion to knowledge in Riko. His passion is cruel and twisted, and Riko right know isn’t, but looking back at what we know — who knows what will become with Rico's passion in the future? Thank you for reaction!

While this show is incredibly messed up in many ways, I don't think the intention was to make it out that Prushka was being abused like that. Bondrewd wanted to foster love and that would just go against his 'research' I feel. Plus, not like he can do anything like that anyways since he isn't really human. More like a father explaining what a penis is without actually explaining it. He wanted that naive nature to foster a deeper connection to him and for others.

Also, it's not so clear but Bondrewd had two goals: 1. To receive the Blessing as he called it through Prushka 2. When Riko and gang were coming he had the next goal of making her a whistle out of Prushka's love. No idea when that idea popped into his head, but if you go through events, just like Ozen, in his own incredibly fucked up way, he was helping Riko continue on to find her mother. If only so he could learn more about the Abyss. Also, now you know why some call him Bone Daddy

HollowedSlayer

"Uncut" but censored parts of the movie. Come on guys. If you're going to do that just put a TW before the scene for the people who can't handle it.

HollowedSlayer

I understand, but why censor the movie? If that's the approach you're going to take why bother having a Premium tier?

thereactpack

We used to do timer uncuts where you had to pull up your own footage anyway. We’ve never not honored anything listed in our diamond tier. We made an executive decision based on the nature of the show and some concerns that have been brought up recently. If you still feel so strongly for this one instance feel free to send us a DM. -Sam

What a masterpiece. Never seen a character like Bondrewd before. The author of MIA is blessed with the talent and ability to create completely original and unorthodox characters and stories, together with the ability to portray completely alien and immersive worlds. Can't wait for season 2. It's on the same level, if not even better.
