My neighbor up here in the same mountains gave me a book that had Mountain Charlie as one of stories. This book claimed that Mountain Charlie drove stage coaches, and was the most trusted and competent driver in the area, and upon Charlie’s death it was discovered that he was in fact a woman, who used a tobacco habit to put grit in their voice and hid this truth from everyone, including their live-in ranch hand and confidant. But I suppose that’s just a tall tale.
