Considering Buchanan could have likely been tried for treason due to his transferring of materiel from Northern armories, into Southern and border state armories (particularly Missouri iirc) just as the war was about to break out, leaving the Union with very few large-bore cannon or field artillery (as well as rifles and other infantry arms) until armaments production could be upscaled by the North...well the modern day equivalents of such a situation are fuckin terrifying. Especially because Civil War v2.1.2 at anything approaching a national scale would not be bounded by geography in nearly the same way as the first was, it would likely take a few months-years before chaos in every direction normalized enough to make clearer distinctions between factions and their alignments. Probably akin to the Syrian or Russian Civil Wars; the day-to-day living conditions for the majority of those conflicts were (and are I guess technically) some of the least desirable that have/has existed in the modern era. Just say no to Buchanans!
