Greetings, Heroes!

I’m Lou Anders. I’m a former SF&F book editor and art director turned novelist turned game designer. I wrote the Thrones & Bones fantasy trilogy, comprised of the books Frostborn, Nightborn, and Skyborn, a stand-alone novel in a different region of the same larger world called Once Upon a Unicorn, and the Star Wars novel Pirate’s Price (the backstory to the Smuggler’s Run ride at the Galaxy’s Edge theme park). I’ve done game design for Kobold Press, River Horse Games, and 3D Printed Tabletop, and last year, I came out with my own 5e campaign setting, based upon the Norse-flavored country of my first novel Frostborn, a place called Norrøngard.

Although the novels were middle-grade books, meaning they were aimed at the 8–12-year-old demographic, I tried to write them to be all-ages fantasy novels in the way something like The Hobbit is also technically a children’s book. I pride myself that I attracted a lot of adult readers (including a large number in Brazil), so when I create the RPG campaign setting, I pitched that at adult gamers. Essentially, it is for anyone who enjoys D&D.

Last year we came out with Thrones & Bones: Norrøngard, the core campaign setting book that includes two fat chapters of world lore, plus a large section on mechanics featuring ancestries, subclasses, backgrounds, feats, equipment, magic items, etc... as well as special rules for rune magic, tracking honor, and dealing with magical resurrection in a world where most adventurers are seeking a glorious death. The book also had a thirty-seven-monster bestiary and two starter adventures.

A follow-up volume, Thrones & Bones: Sagas of Norrøngard, added a further seven adventures after the two introductory ones, for a good 1st to 8thlevel campaign. I penned three of the adventures there, and the other four were written by industry veterans Brian Suskind, Jeff Lee, Ben McFarland, and Sarah Madsen.

There’s also a Player’s Guide to Norrøngard which repackages the player-focused mechanics without spoilers, quite a few digital map packs, and a token pack. Currently,  I’m at work on two separate forthcoming offerings set in Norrøngard, as well as starting initial work on a larger continent-spanning world guide and bestiary that showcases the T&B lands and monsters beyond Norrøngard.

Last year, we also produced the Thrones & Bones Board Game Arena. The book and game series takes its name from an in-universe board game called Thrones & Bones. It’s inspired by the Norse game of hnefatafl, though the exact rule mechanics are my own invention. Andrew Mills and Mike Sheridan produced the 3D printable version, which in addition to the board and playing pieces contains LED-powered braziers and arena seating that snaps onto the sides. Because sometimes adventurers have to fight for their lives on life-sized game boards, now don’t they?

This collaboration has led us to an exciting place. Because now Andrew and I have worked out a licensing agreement for Milestone Heroes to produce official Thrones & Bones 3D printable terrain. Andrew will be working his way through the nine adventures that appear in Thrones & Bones: Norrøngard and Thrones & Bones: Sagas of Norrøngard, and he’ll maybe include some other locations from the setting that haven’t appeared in an adventure…yet.

All of this means that if you are the type of 3D printing gamer that likes to have terrain specifically matching prepared adventures, you’re about to get a lot of it. I’m thrilled to see what Andrew comes up with. To celebrate and inaugurate this joint venture with Milestone Heroes, I’m happy to offer a special discounted price of $9 off the PDF of the core campaign setting book, Thrones & Bones: Norrøngard, for Milestone Heroes Patreon subscribers, good from now until February 12th. You can get the book from DriveThruRPG at the special price by clicking here. (A second discount for the print version of the book will be offered to Andrew’s Patreon subscribers too.)

I look forward to seeing all the amazing terrain prints coming up in the days ahead. And as the Norrønir people say, “Be healthy.”

Lou Anders

P.S. They also say, “Never leave home ahead of your axe and sword.”
