I'm familiar with people like Kyle and how he reacts because I live in rural America in a town that is similar to Smallville in this show. He holds a position of importance in the FD, and by extension the town, and his identity is built around that. His personal life is a facade because its secondary to his identity. When the town turns on him, he loses his identity and because of that, he tries to find some semblance of the same importance he had just now in his personal life. However, it comes off disingenuous and hollow because he has failed at it so many times because it was always secondary. In effect, he wants his family to look upon him the same way the FD and town did before, but it just makes him seem chaotic and weirdly aloof and uncaring. There are people exactly like Kyle in every small town across the country. Do I identify with him being the town I'm from? No. Do I recognize him and how he is presented though? Most certainly yes.

I graduated with 38 people. I know a few of these guys, FD, PD, Town Hall... oh yeah. This is spot on.
