one of the best eps. LOVE IT. period piece, sinister, historical fiction, lore building, its soooo good. sinister was giving me bram stoker vibes. as a kid, when sinister first appeared in season 2, he was HORRIFYING. mostly because of the teeth and voice. by this sinister that fear had faded and with this origin story and my love of vamps this contextualized him into someone i can love and want to know more about. to learn the true history of sinister (at least some of it) read the comic book "the further adventures of cyclops and phoenix". its essentially this episode but with time traveling jean and scott summers and tons more lore.

i have several theories as to "why now" and i think its not just one reason but multiple ones. 1. we didnt meet sinister til season 2 so contextually to give an origin to a character we havent met yet wouldnt have worked. 2. season 4 was supposed to be the finale so there were no plans for season 5. so when they got the news they had to scramble to fill out the season with stories. by season 3 they had got the mandate of making more stand alone episodes so they can run in syndication, cause its all about that paper. 3. the comic it was based on didnt come out til 96 so they couldnt adapt this story before then since it didnt exist 4. as much as its an essex story, its an xavier story as well and THAT aspect leads into the finale. it adds to his backstory (along with the episode "xavier remembers") as to why he does what he does and has this destiny to help mutantdom. 5. the reasons you guys came up with are all valid to me as well. "hey its the finale season, we can basically do what we want and i have a cool sinister episode in mind"
