Traveler! A prolific mage and student of the arcane, Vlad, built an underground laboratory to carry out the work of his life. He built a stone replica of the Tree of Life, an endless supply of a strange liquid that is supposed to control the flow between life and death. Vlad carried out countless experiments to achieve his objective but ultimately failed in completing his research. His curiosity ultimately doomed him and he perished alone in the lab.

Decades later, the filtration system in the laboratory has failed from years of abandonment. The necromancy-infused liquid dumps into the river and poisons the crops and people in nearby settlements. The local authorities offer a significant reward for brave people who dare track the poison upstream to neutralize its source. The mage's lab remains a dangerous place to explore due to the multiple traps and puzzles he set up to protect his research.

Here's a low-def preview of this illustration:

Here's a close-up of the lab's entrance and main study.  North of it, a secret research vault guards the necromancer's secrets and a diagram of the failing filtration system.

The Chamber of Life, the place where Vlad places inert matter and hoped he could reanimate it with a new body and soul. Alas, his experiments never truly worked.
