This was an episode I was really looking forward too because I like the sea devil's in classic who but I have never been more disappointed in an episode than this one, I've tried to like it but this is not for me at all I understand why people would like this and the moments with yaz and the doctor were good but on the whole I probably won't watch this again unless I'm doing a rewatch of the whole series

I like this episode, I feel like I'm the only one but I do like it. I really don't think it's as horrible as people make it out to be. The majority of the fandom HATE this episode, as shown by the other comments here, but I enjoy it and I don't care if I'm the only person with this opinion, I stand by it. Yes as a special it isn't very special lol, it does feel just like any other filler episode in a season. So I did feel slightly disappointed when it aired. But after multiple rewatches it's grown on me a lot. All the Chinese characters in the episode are based on real people from history and all the stuff with the lost treasure and the sea monster are taken from real Chinese myths and the episode had Chinese advisors to make sure they got all the facts right and did everything respectfully. My friend is Chinese and she LOVED seeing these people and myths brought to life on screen. The CGI and special effects were mostly great. The skimming stones didn't look good lol but the rest of it did, especially the sea monster. I enjoyed all the fight scenes, they were a bit cheesy lol but that's very Doctor Who. It reminded me a lot of the fight scenes on the ship between Amy and the pirates in The Curse Of The Black Spot. And as for The Doctor and Yaz, I get what you're saying but you're not meant to be invested in them as a couple. That's the whole point. The writers don't want you to be. It's exactly like you said, 12 lost Clara and River in a veey short space of time and that's why 13 is so closed off. She's told her companions less about herself than any other Doctor ever has. She is in love with Yaz, undoubtedly, but she refuses to let Yaz in to protect herself. Notice how she still hasn't told Yaz anything about what the flux was really about, what happened to her during that time, what The Master told her, all the timeless child stuff etc. And Yaz doesn't even know that The Doctor used to be man, she didn't know The Doctor had a wife until now, she doesn't know about any past companions etc. She is completely closed off to Yaz and on the beach she explains why, because she refuses to let herself be hurt again. You're right that the beach scene was The Doctor saying no, we've never seen that before in this way and I think it's beautiful. Also that ending where The Doctor says she wishes this could go on forever and then looks into the camera makes me tear up every time. Each Doctor gets a little moment like that towards the end of their run and I love it. So yeah, I think there's WAY more good than bad in this episode and I will continue to stand up for it. 😊
