I discuss it in more detail at the end of the video, but we're only going to have one reaction on Friday since the special is a bit longer of an episode than usual.

*****

A Few Notes:

  • Please no spoilers beyond this episode unless you see that later episodes have already been released. In that case, no spoilers beyond those episodes.
  • This video is in a watch-along format. This means you'll need your own copy of the episode to watch alongside my reaction. This is in an effort to avoid copyright infringement.
  • If you're based in the UK (or using a UK streaming site), here are instructions for how to get your copy to sync with mine.
  • The show footage will play for the first 30 seconds with both video and audio. After that, the show footage will be silenced, and the video will be blurred for the remainder of the episode. There is also a count-up timer that begins once the episode has started. These things will hopefully make it easier for you to keep your copy of the episode synced with mine.

The Adopted Whovian

To help with the load of new information there was in this episode, the Division was set up 5 episodes ago in Fugitive of the Judoon. In her TARDIS, the Fugitive Doctor said that she worked for Gat once, that she had a job that no one could apply for or ever leave, so the scene in The Timeless Children with the young Doctor, his adoptive parent Tecteun, & the lady in the same uniform as Gat in the meeting room was the Doctor first being recruited into Division, so there’s an unknown number of Doctors who worked for Division in-between that young incarnation that was first recruited and the Fugitive Doctor who went on the run from Division. In a blink and you’ll miss it moment, when the 13th Doctor and Fugitive Doctor went to the Judoon Ship and confronted Gat, the Judoon Captain said “Contract states Judoon must deliver fugitive to contractee at Division” who Gat said was way higher than her in authority. The part in which Brendan has his memories erased represents the Doctor being mind-wiped and forced back into a child, the First Doctor. This actually fits in quite nicely with Listen, as it was suggested that the young First Doctor was living in a children’s home, as the woman we never saw the face of said to the young First Doctor to come back into the house with the other boys.

This episode really split the fandom 50/50. Personally, I LOVE IT!! I think it's absolute genuis. It really brings back the "who" part of Doctor Who and it makes so many things in the past make sense about how special The Doctor is. It also makes sense of why The Doctor got extra regenerations. My personal theory is that the Time Lords told The Doctor that she only had 12 regenerations like the others. Of course, as this episode shows, she's the only Time Lord with unlimited regenerations but they didn't want her to know that. So I think that Matt's Doctor would've regenerated anyway, he just didn't think he could. And when the Time Lords got Clara's plea for help they were like "well, we have to keep up the charade." So they shot The Doctor just with a beam of light and because The Doctor fully believed that he needed a new regeneration cycle, he fully believed that's what the beam of light was and that's why he could regenerate now. It all fits. And answers the question of why The Doctor got the special treatment of a new cycle from the Time Lords when other Time Lords haven't been given that privilege. It's just such a great twist. 👌 I also think the episode in general is really good. Jodie's acting is UNBELIEVABLE!! Sacha is a fantastic Master to me, he gives me chills. I think the side characters were all very good. And I think the story flowed very well. 😍 Series 12 is truly on ANOTHER LEVEL to series 11. This was the step up that was needed and they did a good job overall for me. I can't wait for the Christmas special, it's a fun one. 😊
