The English Civil War took place in the 1640s, when Parliamentary forces under Oliver Cromwell fought against those loyal to King Charles I. Cromwell won, Charles I was executed in 1649 and the monarchy was abolished. England became a Commonwealth for eleven years, but after Cromwell's death it fell apart and the dead king's son was restored to the throne as Charles II in 1660. It's only at around this point that the story starts to drag a bit, which is remarkable given its length and the speed with which it was written. "The War Games" came about because of the behind the scenes chaos of Season 6, when two planned stories (a six-parter and a four-parter) suddenly collapsed, and producer Derrick Sherwin told Terrance Dicks (who had just started as script editor that year, with "The Invasion") that he would have to fill the ten-episode gap himself. Knowing he couldn't do it all on his own, Dicks called in his friend and mentor Malcolm Hulke, and they scrambled to come up with ten scripts in only a month or so. For a long time this story had a poor reputation among fans (Dicks himself tended to dismiss it as having a good beginning and a good ending, with eight episodes of padding in the middle) but after it came out on VHS (and later DVD) it was soon recognised as being one of the high points of 1960s Doctor Who. Dicks was always an expert at solidly structuring a story, and that combined with Hulke's gift for creating complex and interesting characters resulted in a true epic.

Thanks for this information! I had absolutely no idea about either of the things you shared. lol It's funny that he said it had a good beginning and a good ending, with eight episodes of padding in the middle because I've definitely felt that way about other Classic stories, but not this one. lol
