Apologies for the delay on this week's episodes! They were actually ready in time, but between the brain fog thanks to feeling under the weather and rushing to get things done before leaving this afternoon to go out of town for a conference I can't back out of because I have to give a presentation at it, I just completely spaced actually scheduling these episodes once they finished syncing in Dropbox. 🤦‍♀️

A Few Notes:

  • Please no spoilers beyond this episode unless you see that later episodes have already been released. In that case, no spoilers beyond those episodes.
  • This video is in a watch-along format. This means you'll need your own copy of the episode to watch alongside my reaction. This is in an effort to avoid copyright infringement.
  • If you're based in the UK (or using a UK streaming site), here are instructions for how to get your copy to sync with mine.
  • The show footage will play for the first 30 seconds with both video and audio. After that, the show footage will be silenced, and the video will be blurred for the remainder of the episode. There is also a count-up timer that begins once the episode has started. These things will hopefully make it easier for you to keep your copy of the episode synced with mine.
  • This episode was viewed on HBO Max.

I like this episode but I don't love it, the story feels a bit choppy and almost not quite finished. Which is probably because of the reasons Jason gave above. As for what Clara's feelings are towards The Doctor now, she loves him romantically still. For sure. But she's really into Danny too. And this causes a lot of issues and a lot of interesting storylines across the season. You'll see what I mean. This is more than a Rose being torn between The Doctor and Mickey situation, it's way worse. All I'm going to say. 👀 But I love how we see in this episode just how well Clara knows The Doctor and how much he trusts her and cares for her. It's the little things like how he held her hand to help her out of the bolt hole and how he grabbed her to lift her over the ledge when they were climbing up the Dalek's walls. He didn't try to help the others, only her. And what she said to him at the end is one of my favourite quotes from the whole show, she doesn't know if he's a good man but he tries to be and that's the point. That sums The Doctor up SO perfectly. And I also loved the way Clara slapped him and talked sense into him lol. I think The Doctor loves that she's not afraid to take him on. This duo is just perfect to me and I could gush about them for hours lol. 😂 And also you're right about this Doctor being darker than Matt's Doctor. He definitely is and you see that from the start. He's grumpy and closed off and almost lacks empathy towards everyone other than Clara. And I actually like that we've got a Doctor like this straight after Matt because having Doctors with opposite and different personalities one after the other keeps things interesting, for me anyway. 🙂

Capaldi's Doctor shouldn't exist (in his mind). Smith was the 13th incarnation, and lived for 100's of years as an old man, and thought his time was up. I think that's the reason for 12th's grumpier attitude. Don't get me wrong though, 12 is my favorite Doctor, he's the perfect blend of Classic Who and NuWho. But his new demeaner is a little difficult to warm up to on first watch. He lacks empathy, but that will become endearing over time.
