rory can be kind of annoying sometimes but I really like what he adds to the show here :) it feels like "what if just like a completely normal person was a companion?" about the whole "you make people dangerous to themselves when you're around" thing... i don't know if I would say it's the doctor's fault exactly, but he *does* know that he does it. ten had the whole "you take ordinary people and fashion them into weapons" thing at the end of season 4 so eleven *is* aware of what happens to the people he invites with him and he invites them anyway. i like that rory picks up on that so quickly. and, as opposed to mickey and rose, rory seems much more willing to put himself in danger to rescue amy than mickey ever was for rose at his introduction, which I like :)

On the whole, this story isn't as good as the previous two-parter, and has to really rush things to fit its plot into 45 minutes. Hence the Doctor's convenient immediate befriending of Guido who can tell him all about the Calvierri school, and who conveniently has a map showing a secret underground way into it. (By the way -- an underground passage, in Venice? Wouldn't that be rather damp?) Not to mention his convenient stash of gunpowder that provides a way to easily dispose of all the vampire girls as soon as they've become superfluous to the story, after which the Doctor finds a convenient "story off" switch to flick which immediately solves all the problems... The attempt to "scientifically" explain the aliens' vampire-like abilities is cute, but I couldn't buy the Doctor being unable to see the reflections because they're too bizarre or horrific -- there's probably no one in the universe less likely to be fazed by a creature's strange appearance. On the other hand, the Doctor/Amy/Rory interaction works really well (especially Rory); by the end all three are in a better place than they were at the start, which makes for a really good Doctor/companions setup as the season continues.
