This is where I react to pilot episodes of shows I've never seen (so, obviously, NO SPOILERS please).

If I enjoy the pilot and, more importantly, if I get enough positive feedback from you, I might turn it into a full reaction series at some point.

A Few Notes:

  • This video is in a watch along format. This means you'll need your own copy of the episode to watch alongside my reaction. This is in an effort to avoid copyright infringement.
  • If you're based in the UK (or using a UK streaming site), here are instructions for how to get your copy to sync with mine.
  • If you want to know what’s coming up, check out the schedule here.

I'll be catching up on Patreon comments from this week later today, but I just want to quickly say that it being a parody here in the beginning definitely helps it make more sense. I went into it thinking it was supposed to be a serious show, and I honestly think that threw me off for most of the episode. I prefer serious shows, but I do enjoy when a show can make fun of itself or the genre a little bit (Supernatural and Jane the Virgin come to mind).

Yeah certain aspects are "heighten"/parody like Sue having an "over-the-top" coach persona and her having her cheerleaders wear their uniforms all the time (in reality cheerleaders often just wear uniforms at school when there was a pep-rally and at games). Glee is definitely more comedy with some drama moments mixed in these earlier seasons (Seasons 1-3). Later on it does try to have "serious" episodes then the next episode might be full on parody/comedy. So I see why some people have a real issue with it personally it didn't bother me as much as it did some but everybody has different opinions of the later seasons (Seasons 4-6).

To answer some of your questions from the reaction.: Yes Cory Monteith (Finn) did unfortunately pass away (he passed away when the show was still airing). Two other actors from the show Mark Salling (Puck) and Naya Rivera (Santana) also passed away (they passed away after the show finished). Mark is the most controversial Glee actor because of what he did (a quick google search will tell you what he did). Some of the inappropriate comments the writers had Puck say were a little to truthful in Mark's case. Naya unfortunately died in a drowning accident saving her son. I say this now just because if this does eventually become a series reaction on YouTube I'm sure many will tell you about Cory, Naya, and Mark. Yes Matthew Morrison (Mr Shue) did date one of the students from the Glee Club . Matthew dated Lea Michele (Rachel) briefly when they were on Broadway before Glee. With Glee there are a lot of behind the scenes stories regarding the friendships, relationships, and conflicts between the cast members (even for people that haven't watched Glee I feel like a lot of people know some of both the good and bad behind the scenes stories from the show). Glee was super popular/still has a sizable fanbase even though it is no longer on the air and as fans we did know some of the behind the scenes things that got written into the show while other behind the scenes things weren't acknowledged. Regarding Finn's voice it does eventually get better. Cory Monteith wasn't a singer prior to Glee and ended up having vocal coaching which improved his voice. If you continue watching the show you'll notice Finn's voice slowly getting better his best songs vocally (both early on and after he got vocal coaching) are the Rock songs he performs. Personally of the male singers you've heard so far on the show I think Kevin McHale (Artie) has the best male voice. Overall though of the singers on the show Amber Riley (Mercedes) has the best voice in my opinion (Amber's voice was only heard briefly in this episode).
