This two parter came about because they'd used up most of the budget for the first 13 episodes, and a story requiring only existing sets was required. As you say,the first part is a neat little suspenser. The explanation in part two is that the 'fast return' switch had got stuck - so the Tardis was hurtling back in time toward the beginning of the Universe. Unable to actually tell them,it was attempting to attract their attention by melting the clock face;putting images onto the scanner showing the birth of the Universe; .....and getting Susan to murder them with a pair of scissors. Yeah,that latter part was inexplicable! What I ultimately like about this story are two things: The Tardis is hinted at being more than just a machine - it somehow cares for the safety of the Doctor and his companions (even though it has rather an odd way of showing it); and the Tardis team.through adversity,bond together - especially the Doctor and Barbara. For the first time,at the end of the story,they're actually enjoying being together; and looking forward to whatever happens to them next. The following story is the first of the infamous 'lost episodes' -all 7 of them! You will be rejoining the Tardis Team a couple of stories down the line.

The explanation of the fast return switch and the TARDIS warning them definitely makes sense. But, they were building it up to be something completely different in the first part and I liked that storyline better given how everyone was acting/reacting. I still take issue with no getting explanations for the two biggest side effects (Susan and Ian trying to murder the others and people getting neck pain and then fainting if they went near specific parts of the controls and not the other part). But, overall, they were still entertaining and that's difficult to pull off with limited sets/available locations. I think I did make a comment about how the ship can think for itself, but that this might be when we find that out. I guess it was. lol I do like that the Doctor didn't even know until this moment, though. That was an interesting bit of information/history to get. This did seem like the first time Ian and Barabara weren't instantly like, "Okay, let's get back home," immediately after the danger subsided. So, you can see that shift starting to happen. The next/final story from season 1 is The Aztecs and I've already recorded the first two episodes in it. :)

The neck pain at certain parts of the controls was the Tardis trying to direct the crew to where the problem was, in the hopes the one part where there was no pain would be looked at more closely. I can only assume the Tardis telepathically causing pain and knocking the crew out caused some temporary madness.
