The Doctor did indeed deliberately create an excuse to go to the city. It is fair to say he was a bit untrustworthy back then. (you see him pull out the fluid link before the Tardis "broke")

Honestly, I kinda like it. I'm a *huge* fan of Untrustworthy Doctor.

Ian Smith

Me too. Although he's become friendlier toward Ian and Barbara,he's still behaving like a rather naughty child (which,in Gallifreyan years,he sort of is.) He's not yet reached the 'crusading righter-of-wrongs';but the ingredients are all there.

You were interested in trying out the BigFinish audios - they produced a range of prequel stories a few years back, detailing the adventures of the First Doctor and Susan prior to their ending up at 76 Totters Lane. These weren't full dramas so much as 'enhanced audio books'. Because Hartnell had died many years earlier, the stories are narrated by Susan (Carol Ann Ford) with one or two other actors playing different characters - so they're partially narrated (usually the parts involving the Doctor) and partially acted (for the scenes between Susan and the people she encounters). They usually last around one hour. The best things about them are 1) Susan doesn't scream as much as she does in the series (if at all); 2) they feature the Tardis before the Chamelion Circuit broke; so it's still able to disguise itself :) No Ian or Barbara, obviously - but because they're the Doctors very first stories, there aren't really any spoilers either. "Quinnis" is probably the best,as it's set immediately before they arrive on Earth.
