I believe (do not know the exact story) that TSR was threatened by the Tolkien Estate in the late 1970s for using the term "Hobbit" and thus had to change the name to "Halfling". I do not know the details, but it would be fun and interesting to include in your paper. As it seems the tables were once turned on D&D for copyright / trademark issues.
