How to say "only" in Japanese

こんにちは！今回は「だけ」と「しか」の違いについて説明します。
「分かる！」と思っていても、実は間違っていることが多い言葉なので、気を付けましょう！

Hello! This time I'll explain the differences between "dake" and "shika" (=only; nothing but).
People often make mistakes when it comes to these words even when they think they understand. So be careful!

konnichiwa! Konkai wa "dake" to "shika" no chigai nitsuite setsumei shimasu.
"Wakaru!" to omottei-temo, jitsu wa machigatteiru koto ga ooi kotoba na node, ki wo tsuke-mashou.)

2. My dad only drinks wine. (*judging*)

1.  （私は）水だけ飲む。 (inf.) / 水だけ飲みます。
　（私【わたし】は）水（みず）だけ飲（の）む。 (inf.) / 水（みず）だけ飲（の）みます。

2.  お父さんはワインしか飲まない。(inf.) / 父はワインしか飲みません。
お父（とう）さんはワインしか飲（の）まない。(inf.) / 父（ちち）はワインしか飲（の）みません。

3. ケーキしか食べないの？(inf.) /  ケーキしか食べないんですか？(form.)
　ケーキしか食（た）べないの？/ ケーキしか食（た）べないんですか？

Note:
It sounds more natural to add の / んだ.
In fact, when you are surprised (thus wanting the listener to explain himself) and judging at the same time, you'll see this 「しか___ないの？」 a lot.

4. 名字だけ書いてください。(form.)
　名字（みょうじ）だけ書（か）いてください。

5.  留学のことは親友だけに      言った。(inf.) / 言いました。(form.)
　留学（りゅうがく）のことは親友（しんゆう）だけに      言（い）った。(inf.) / 言（い）いました。

Note1: You can also say 「にだけ」.

Note 2: You can also use the word 「について (=about)」and say
留学については親友だけに言った。

You can also change the word order:
親友だけに留学のことを言った。
(Make sure to use the を particle in this word order.)
親友だけに留学について言った。
