Ophiuchus is the 13th zodiac sign.

Over the past couple years, one of the most common requests I've received has been to expand the Zodiac series to include Ophiuchus. It's something I've been meaning to do for a while, but now I've finally committed to completing :)

There is a lot of room for me to bring my own flavor to this painting. First off, since Ophiuchus isn't a classically recognized zodiac sign, I couldn't find any reliable references to Angel names. Instead, I made the unusual choice to create a name for the Angel of Ophiuchus. Kundaliel is a reference to Kundalini, a Sanskrit word meaning "coiled snake".

Throughout my research for this piece, I was specifically searching for reverent depictions of snakes, since that is the core symbol for Ophiuchus. The reference that came up most often was the Naga. A half-human half-snake god that is dramatically depicted in throughout Thailand.

The name is a mixture of Hebrew and Hindu. The concept is Greek as seen through the style of Thailand. There is nothing singular about this Zodiac. It is the synthesis of multiple hybrids, coming together into a new thing. An weird outsider carrying it's own unique energy.
