I always like seeing paintings that have a mix of more rendered/sculpted bits with really flat areas. It's something that never comes naturally to me stylistically, but I keep wanting to experiment with it more.

At this stage of the painting, the goal is to get as close as I can to the mixture of sculpted versus flat elements along with creating an outline for which parts of the painting would be light, medium or dark shades.  There's a lot of squinting that goes on at this point. It's often hard to make a final determination whether I'm seeing a strong solution on the page itself or if I'm just seeing the potential of where it can go. It's so hard to tell when it's your own work.
