I've gotten to see the most amazing cloudscapes these last few months. There was no way I was going to skip the opportunity to reference them for my next painting :) Watching the sun rise and fall over the water has been amazing.

I wanted the atmosphere to be serene and a little wistful, so instead of going with a bright blue sky I chose to give it lighting more like sunrise/sunset.

When I started this painting, I was going in a little bit of a different direction by making it landscape format from the start. But the longer I've worked on it, the longer the composition has gotten as well. This is now the aspect ratio of the desk mats I make. It should look pretty cool as a super wide print as well.

The source file is 12,000px wide at this point, so I switched it over to a "PSB", which is identical in function to a standard Photoshop document, but doesn't get corrupted if the file ever grows past 4GB. Right now we're only at 500MB, but my past super large files ended up needing the PSB treatment, so I decided to get out ahead of it.
